LCD Soundsystem are back for real, with new material and a tour. The band supposedly split in 2011, but returned for a Christmas release in 2015, and started writing for a new album. 2017 is the year of that album, and LCD Soundsystem will be taking it all over the world. The band formed in 2002 in Brooklyn, and released tracks as singles via frontman James Murphy’s own record label, DFA Records. They eventually released their first full album in 2005 to great acclaim, and were nominated for two Grammys as a result. Their second album in 2007 was even more well received, and earned them more award nominations and top ten lists for publications such as Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Their third saw the band make the Billboard 200 top ten in the US in 2010, selling over 30,000 copies in the first week. It also charted well in Australia, New Zealand and the UK - where it hit number 7 in the album chart. In February 2011, LCD Soundsystem announced its disbandment, giving a farewell show and recording it for a documentary film release and live album. They went out in a blaze of glory, though it was never say never. Rumors and teases of a reunion were rife for a while, until December 2015 when the band released the single “Christmas Will Break Your Heart”. They announced a new album, and that they would be playing live once again, to the great joy of fans everywhere.
LCD Soundsystem are a live band first and foremost. Their fusion of electronic dance music and alternative rock, as well as their indie status, have given the band great respect and reverence from music fans and critics, as well as other musicians. James Murphy himself has worked as a producer, writer, vocalist and label owner, so taking control of an act with the drive and knowledge to “make it” was a recipe for success. They knew when to cool it off, and they knew when the time was right to return.
