The music of Arohi is a contemporary sound steeped in the classical ragas and rhythmic dynamism of Indian music. Incorporating elements of jazz, Latin music & classical counterpoint on traditional instruments from India and the west, Arohi's 'ragajazz chamber music' weaves raga meditations, poly-rhythmic counterpoint & exciting improvisations into their unique sound.
Paul, Pete & Dave have been recording and touring together for over 10 years & have been featured on Grammy Award winning records with Ozomatli, Quetzal & Rickey Kej and collaborated with a wide variety of leading international touring jazz, popular & world music artists.
PAUL LIVINGSTONE —Sitarist
International performing artist Paul Livingstone is one of the few American disciples of the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar and Pt. Rajeev Taranath. He has performed around the US, Mexico and India & Southeast Asia with leading tabla artists form India & Nepal such as Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, Homnath Upadhyaya & Abhijit Banerjee. Paul is a dedicated sitarist for 32 years, a multi-instrumentalist and composer of 'ragajazz chamber music' in the realm of world music synthesis leading his own Arohi Ensemble. Paul is just returning from 2018 spring tour, Islamabad, Lahore & Karachi, Pakistan.
He has composed and recorded for film & television, as well as creating music for live theater & dance productions. He has been featured on two Grammy Award-winning records and performed & recorded with popular artists such as Alanis Morrisette, Ozomatli, Rickey Kej, Emmanuel and as well collaborating with traditional & jazz crossover artists from Guinea, Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam, Venezuela, Spain, Syria and South Asia as well as artists from around the US & Canada.
Paul is currently is on the music faculty at Glendale Community College teaching Indian and world music ensembles and is the creator of the Soul Force Project, an evolving multimedia performance promoting the history & relevance of nonviolent action & revolution. A committed community activist & educator with a vision for cross-cultural collaboration that reflects his innermost social, political & spiritual values through the transcendent joy of music.
Peter Jacobson is a cellist, producer, songwriter-singer, chamber musician, teacher and music selector who has recorded, performed and toured with renowned artists. He studied with Eleonore Schoenfeld at USC as well as at Cal Arts and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2013 he won a Grammy for best Latin Rock Alternative or Urban Album as a member of the group Quetzal. Mr. Jacobson has recorded cello for Dr. Dre and frequently plays alongside the San Diego Symphony. Pete has recorded for film and tv, including The Walking Dead. In 2000 he was a member of the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan and has performed in the US, Mexico, Asia, Australia the Middle East and Europe. He plays with Grammy-winning Southwest Chamber Music, the Arohi Ensemble, the 440's, SANGAM, ThE CoNcEnTr8s, Quartetto Fantastico, the Hutchins Consort and as a freelance cellist.
Renowned percussionist Dave Lewis is easily one of the most exciting drumming talents in the world today. Born in 1983, Lewis grew up playing piano and began composing at the age of 8. By twelve, he was given his first drum set and never looked back. Influenced by jazz, latin, rock and East Indian classical music, Lewis‘s ingenuity took him well beyond his years. He received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in December of 2005. A solid, articulate and dynamic musician, Lewis has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Vince Neil (Motley Crue) Robby Kreiger (The Doors) George Thorogood, Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Joe Lovano, Sheila E., Deepak Ram, Kai Eckhardt, Taufiq Qureshi, George Brooks, Arohi Ensemble, Paul Livingstone, Abhijit Banerjee, Pedro Eustache, Peter Jacobson, Salar Nader, Alam Khan, Sheila Govindarajan, Maiya Sykes and Mirror Talk. Aside from maintaining a high profile as one of the most in demand live and studio musicians in Los Angeles, Lewis also brings music to the big screen as a composer, where his works range from commercials to films. Whether creating lush soundscapes or thunderous drums, Lewis brings breathtaking emotion to his creative works.
