Set during the Great Depression,The Grapes of Wrath tells the powerful story of the Joad family’s trek from the dust bowl of Oklahoma to the promise of a new life in California. But what they find threatens to rip apart their lives, and sever the ties that bind them together. A heart-wrenching full cast adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by John Steinbeck and the 1990 Tony Award Winner for Best Play, Frank Galati’s adaptation finds its timeless heart in the generous spirit of the common man. Original music composed and performed by the Joel Rafael Band: Joel Rafael, Jamaica Rafael, and Carl Johnson.
Phil and Ted welcome radio and audio producer extraordinaire and colleague, Bill Kates for a fun hour of radio stories. An early interest in acting and art led to his lifelong study of film and animation, which he continued during his 30+ years in radio broadcasting, producing for major market radio at WBCN, Boston, K-Rock in New York City, and XM Radio (later Sirius/XM) in New York City, where he specialized in unique, musical and comedic radio production.
We speak with Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, about high-level U.S.-Cuban migration talks held last week in Washington. He says U.S. policies that expedite permanent residency for Cubans in the United States play a major role in the movement of people between the two countries, but adds that the main driver of migration is the decadeslong U.S. embargo. “The economic conditions of the people of Cuba push them to migrate, and an important fact in provoking those conditions are U.S. deliberate policies of destroying the Cuban economy and make it unworkable.” Fernández de Cossío also discusses the 2024 election and policy overlap between the Trump and Biden administrations, Cuba’s position on the U.S.-backed Israeli war on Gaza, recent protests inside Cuba over living conditions and more.
Hundreds of climate activists gathered at the global headquarters of Citigroup in New York on Wednesday to demand the banking giant stop financing fossil fuel companies. The protests come on the heels of a first-of-its-kind Earth Day hearing where environmental activists from around the world gathered in New York this week to condemn what they call Citigroup’s environmental racism. Citibank is the world’s second-largest funder of coal, oil and gas. “They always say, 'We care about the planet.' … But actions speak louder than words,” says Alice Hu, climate campaigner for New York Communities for Change. “Citibank has poured over $332 billion into fossil fuels since the Paris Agreements were signed in 2015.” We also speak with Roishetta Ozane, a Black environmental leader from Sulphur, Louisiana, who has been leading the fight against the expansion of Citigroup-funded liquified natural gas projects in her community. She says she has seen the health impacts of such projects on her own family. “I’m fighting not only for myself and my community, but for my children. And by fighting for my children, I’m fighting for everyone’s children,” says Ozane.

The court takes Wednesdays off in Donald Trump's New York criminal trial on 34 felony counts related to his use of hush-money paid to a porn star to help him cheat his way to winning the 2016 Presidential election. So, today is a good opportunity for us here on The BradCast to get caught up [...]
During opening statements in the disgraced former President's ongoing criminal trial, prosecutors argued the scheme surrounding his hush-money payments to a porn star just before the 2016 election amounted to "election fraud, pure and simple." Similar fraud since then, by Trump and now much of his Republican party, pervades many of our stories on today's [...]
Several elite college campuses such as those of Columbia University, New York University, Harvard and Yale were closed on Monday following major protest actions in support of Palestinian rights and against Israel’s on-going genocide in Gaza.

Dam removal on California's rivers is a highly visible and inspiring recognition of the benefits of natural services provided by healthy ecosystems.
Tracker picks up where we left off last week looking at the removal of the dam on the Matilija River in Ventura County, as she reviews and reports on the progress of LA River rewilding.
We discuss the role of tribal communities and efforts led by women to restore and rebalance, in light of Governor Newsom's recent announcement supporting removal of three additional dams in the state alongside ongoing efforts to free the Klamath.

Pacifica National Board Motions on Terms for Those Elected in 2023 Elections
Whereas there were insufficient funds to hold elections in 2022, which was year 2 of Pacifica’s 3-year election cycle in which half of the delegates would be elected;
Whereas the PNB passed a motion on October 20, 2022 providing that delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 would continue to serve in 2023 if Pacifica failed to hold elections;
Whereas delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 were either in their first term and therefore eligible to run again, or in their second term and therefore ineligible to run again, according to the Pacifica bylaws, and the delay from 2022 to 2023 in holding elections does not change that eligibility status;
Whereas Pacifica is in the midst of the election cycle for 2023, with the record period having passed, the period for candidate nomination having closed, the ballots not yet sent to members, and ballots slated to be sent to voters in the second half of August; and
Whereas it is important for voters to understand before they cast their votes the length of terms to which successful candidates would be elected and serve;
Therefore be it resolved that all candidates running in the 2023 delegate elections are running for two-year terms, and that the elections.pacifica.org website and the ballot shall reflect this information. Pacifica elections would return to the Article Four, Section 3 schedule of holding elections in years one and two and no elections in year three (i.e., elections in 2024 and 2025 but not in 2026).
