Phil and Ted welcome radio and audio producer extraordinaire and colleague, Bill Kates for a fun hour of radio stories. An early interest in acting and art led to his lifelong study of film and animation, which he continued during his 30+ years in radio broadcasting, producing for major market radio at WBCN, Boston, K-Rock in New York City, and XM Radio (later Sirius/XM) in New York City, where he specialized in unique, musical and comedic radio production.
During WWII in Seattle, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi fights the US government's orders to forcibly remove and incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. As he struggles to reconcile his country's betrayal with his passionate belief in the US Constitution, Gordon begins a 50-year journey toward a greater understanding of America's triumphs - and a confrontation with its failures. Includes an interview with playwright Jeanne Sakata.
Democracy Now! speaks with the great labor organizer and writer Jane McAlevey about the historic victory for Volkswagen employees at a Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory who voted overwhelmingly to join the United Auto Workers union. The plant will become the first foreign-owned car factory in the South to unionize. “This win wasn’t just a win — it was what we would call a beatdown,” says McAlevey, who says the UAW’s recent success is a result of direct democracy and smart, strategic organizing that could lead to the unionizing of Mercedes workers in Alabama. “It’ll be a massive change in the U.S. South.” We also speak with McAlevey about her terminal cancer diagnosis and why she’s “going to fight until the last dying minute, because that’s what American workers deserve.”
Fifty-six years ago today, hundreds of students at Columbia University in New York started a revolt on campus, occupying school buildings and disrupting class to protest the school’s ties to the Vietnam War and racism in New York. Democracy Now! co-host Juan González, who participated in the 1968 protests when hundreds of students were injured by police and arrested, speaks about the rebellion and how it compares to Columbia’s crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters occupying campus today. “What really strikes me about this response is the total flouting of any kind of democratic process by the current administration compared to what happened in 1968,” says González. “These students are protesting a genocide that is occurring before the eyes of the entire world and that is being funded by U.S. arms. And if anyone has the right to rebel and to stand up against injustice, these students do.”

Dam removal on California's rivers is a highly visible and inspiring recognition of the benefits of natural services provided by healthy ecosystems.
Tracker picks up where we left off last week looking at the removal of the dam on the Matilija River in Ventura County, as she reviews and reports on the progress of LA River rewilding.
We discuss the role of tribal communities and efforts led by women to restore and rebalance, in light of Governor Newsom's recent announcement supporting removal of three additional dams in the state alongside ongoing efforts to free the Klamath.

Pacifica National Board Motions on Terms for Those Elected in 2023 Elections
Whereas there were insufficient funds to hold elections in 2022, which was year 2 of Pacifica’s 3-year election cycle in which half of the delegates would be elected;
Whereas the PNB passed a motion on October 20, 2022 providing that delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 would continue to serve in 2023 if Pacifica failed to hold elections;
Whereas delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 were either in their first term and therefore eligible to run again, or in their second term and therefore ineligible to run again, according to the Pacifica bylaws, and the delay from 2022 to 2023 in holding elections does not change that eligibility status;
Whereas Pacifica is in the midst of the election cycle for 2023, with the record period having passed, the period for candidate nomination having closed, the ballots not yet sent to members, and ballots slated to be sent to voters in the second half of August; and
Whereas it is important for voters to understand before they cast their votes the length of terms to which successful candidates would be elected and serve;
Therefore be it resolved that all candidates running in the 2023 delegate elections are running for two-year terms, and that the elections.pacifica.org website and the ballot shall reflect this information. Pacifica elections would return to the Article Four, Section 3 schedule of holding elections in years one and two and no elections in year three (i.e., elections in 2024 and 2025 but not in 2026).
