On Wednesday, 4,000 Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, begin voting in a closely watched election on whether to organize with the United Auto Workers in what could be the union’s first big victory as they try to expand into the southern United States after huge contract wins in 2023 with Detroit companies General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. Journalist Hamilton Nolan argues this is “probably the most important union election that this country has seen in years,” as unions attempt to challenge southern states’ economic policy of creating cheap, exploited labor to attract major corporations. “The South is really funneling money to international corporations for free, and the UAW is trying to put an end to that.”
Democracy Now! speaks with two of the Google employees who were arrested staging sit-ins on Tuesday at the company’s offices in New York City and in Sunnyvale, California, to protest the tech giant’s work with the Israeli government. Organized by the group No Tech for Apartheid, the protesters are demanding Google withdraw from Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract to provide cloud computing services to the Israeli military. “Google execs basically chose to arrest workers for speaking out against the use of our technology to power the first AI-powered genocide,” says Google software engineer Mohammad Khatami, who was arrested in New York. Google worker-organizer Ray Westrick, who was arrested occupying CEO Thomas Kurian’s office, says “more people are willing to organize and risk their jobs in order to take a stand against complicity in genocide.” We also speak with No Tech for Apartheid organizer and former Google worker Gabriel Schubiner, who calls on the tech industry to divest from Google and Amazon services. “Technology workers actually have a lot of power to shift this paradigm and to remove technology from this deep complicity with the Israeli occupation,” Schubiner says.

On today's BradCast: If only the corrupted U.S. Supreme Court cared as much about the exact words in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment (the "Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause") as they pretend to care about the word "otherwise" in a criminal statute used to hold hundreds of January 6 insurrectionists --- including the former President --- [...]
Even Joe Biden is now making jokes about the plummeting value of the former President's latest scam, his attempt to turn his failing social media site into a Wall Street meme stock. As discussed on today's BradCast, it ain't working. At least for now. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.] The value of Trump [...]

Dam removal on California's rivers is a highly visible and inspiring recognition of the benefits of natural services provided by healthy ecosystems.
Tracker picks up where we left off last week looking at the removal of the dam on the Matilija River in Ventura County, as she reviews and reports on the progress of LA River rewilding.
We discuss the role of tribal communities and efforts led by women to restore and rebalance, in light of Governor Newsom's recent announcement supporting removal of three additional dams in the state alongside ongoing efforts to free the Klamath.
Extended video version here, with awesome overhead footage from drones.

Pacifica National Board Motions on Terms for Those Elected in 2023 Elections
Whereas there were insufficient funds to hold elections in 2022, which was year 2 of Pacifica’s 3-year election cycle in which half of the delegates would be elected;
Whereas the PNB passed a motion on October 20, 2022 providing that delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 would continue to serve in 2023 if Pacifica failed to hold elections;
Whereas delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 were either in their first term and therefore eligible to run again, or in their second term and therefore ineligible to run again, according to the Pacifica bylaws, and the delay from 2022 to 2023 in holding elections does not change that eligibility status;
Whereas Pacifica is in the midst of the election cycle for 2023, with the record period having passed, the period for candidate nomination having closed, the ballots not yet sent to members, and ballots slated to be sent to voters in the second half of August; and
Whereas it is important for voters to understand before they cast their votes the length of terms to which successful candidates would be elected and serve;
Therefore be it resolved that all candidates running in the 2023 delegate elections are running for two-year terms, and that the elections.pacifica.org website and the ballot shall reflect this information. Pacifica elections would return to the Article Four, Section 3 schedule of holding elections in years one and two and no elections in year three (i.e., elections in 2024 and 2025 but not in 2026).
