Re: Notes from meeting of June 29, 2005
Present at the meeting: Julie Rodriguez, Bill Gallegos, Kimberly King
Chair – Julie, Secretary - Bill
1. Racism, Diversity and Equity Training
Bill reported that the LSB had approved the training proposal from Mary Lee and Benny Torres. The training will consist of two half-day workshops. Eva Georgia would like to include her management team in the workshops and the COI agreed.
Dates suggested by the trainers are: Saturday July 16-Sunday July 17, or Saturday July 23-Sunday- July 24, or Saturday August 13-Sunday August 14th.
- Bill will ask Eva if we can reserve the Sportsman's Lodge for the workshops. Julie will check with the national to see if they will cover the training costs.
2. National COI Report
Julie reported that the national COI had had a conference call. The national COI had Rafael Renteria and Leslie Radford give an update on the follow up on then national Race and Nationality Resolutions. They are working on a budget that would lay out the financial impact of implementing the resolutions. There has been no decision on who will cover the costs ' National, Local stations, or some combination.
Only KPFK and KPFT have functioning local COIs. KPFT has developed its first quarterly diversity report.
The national COI is also developing a blue ribbon commission on affirmative action. They are asking local LSBs for candidates for this commission, which will assess how best Pacifica can implement affirmative action under current law. Julie Rodriguez has recommended Tom Saenz, the Director of MALDEF for this commission. If LSB members have possible candidates, please forward that information to local COI members.
- Kimberly will bring a proposal for the content of this report to the next COI meeting. We have set a deadline of September 30th to submit this report to the LSB. We are also suggesting to the folks working on changes in the By-Laws that this report be changed from a quarterly to an annual report. An annual report will allow more time to be comprehensive and to implement and assess the impact of any changes made to promote diversity.
4. Spanish language national news program
We will invite Eva Georgia and Fernando Velasquez to our next COI meeting to report on the progress of developing this program.
5. Apprenticeship Training Program
The COI has agreed to take responsibility for developing this training proposal for submission to the LSB. Bill will be point person for this project and will bring a draft concept paper to the next COI meeting. We will also invite Sue Welch to the meeting to discuss possible funding opportunities for this program. Bill will also contact Norman Jayo from KPFK to learn more about their training program called First Voices.
* Next COI Meeting: Wednesday August 10th 2005 at 6:00pm at the Cesar Chavez Foundation, 500 N. Brand Boulevard, 16th floor (in Glendale).
