March 14, 2011 – North Hollywood, CA. On Tuesday, March 15th, KPFK Radio will begin broadcasting Al Jazeera English News at 3pm Pacific Time, Monday through Friday.

"Al Jazeera has been the most important, most influential media outlet in the world in the first years of this decade," says KPFK Program Director Alan Minsky. "By giving voice to the voiceless across the Arab Middle East, Al Jazeera has played an essential role in changing the world. KPFK is also committed to providing an outlet for the voices of the dispossessed; Al Jazeera is a perfect fit for us.”

“The virtual exclusion of Al Jazeera English from the American media market is an absurdity that KPFK is thrilled to help rectify. Al Jazeera's journalism is of impeccable quality - and the people at the network consistently exhibit unwavering courage that makes the network a beacon for serious journalists everywhere. KPFK is thrilled with this joint venture," added Minsky.

The Al Jazeera English Television broadcasts to more than 250 million households in more than 120 countries and has the most watched news channel on YouTube, receiving 2.5 million views per month. However, Al Jazeera English is unavailable on the basic platforms available through the major cable and satellite television providers in the United States.

Al Jazeera English News is now available on the Pacifica Radio network in the United States; KPFK 90.7 FM is the Pacifica station for Southern California.

Starting this week, KPFK Radio will also broadcast Truthdig Radio on a weekly basis, Wednesdays at 2pm Pacific. The show will be a joint production of KPFK and the award-winning journalism website Truthdig.com.

Prominent Blogger and veteran radio host Brad Friedman will be rounding out the Wednesday mid-afternoon line-up, every week at 3:30pm. Friedman is the force behind the investigative website, Bradblog.com.

After a two month hiatus, the science program Explorations hosted by Professor Michio Kaku will be returning to the KPFK airwaves this week, broadcasting Saturdays at 10am Pacific.

About Al Jazeera English

Al Jazeera English is the first English language world news channel to be headquartered in the Middle East. Launched in November 2006, Al Jazeera English seeks to present every side and every angle to its stories and act as a bridge between cultures. With unique access, making it the channel of reference for Middle East events, and 65 bureaus strategically placed around the world, Al Jazeera English provides independent and impartial news for a global audience, giving voice to different perspectives from under-reported regions around the world.

Al Jazeera English is available in more than 100 countries to more than 220 million households worldwide. The channel was awarded “Best 24 Hour News Programme” at the 48th and 50th Annual Monte Carlo Television Festival and has received awards from the Royal Television Society, Amnesty International and YouTube. The channel has also received a total of six International Emmy nominations in the News, Documentary and Current Affairs categories.

Al Jazeera began in 1996 as the first independent Arabic news channel in the world dedicated to providing comprehensive television news and live debate for the Arab world. Al Jazeera was formally named the Al Jazeera Network in March 2006, transforming its operation into an international media corporation – the Al Jazeera Network now consists of the flagship Al Jazeera Arabic channel, Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Documentary, Al Jazeera Sport, Al Jazeera.net (the English and Arabic web sites), the Al Jazeera Media Training and Development Center, the Al Jazeera Center for Studies, Al Jazeera Mubasher (Live), and Al Jazeera Mobile.
