A double screening documenting legendary sitar master Ravi Shankar

FREE SCREENING – NO RESERVATIONS NECESSARY

Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Film Journey Into the Soul of India directed by Howard Worth documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar’s life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar’s influences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, and master tabla player Alla Rakha, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin, George Harrison and Colin Walcott. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar’s life. (1971, digitally remastered – UK – 97 mn)

“As satisfying musically as it is visually, Raga celebrates Ravi’s artistry and passion…” Songlines Magazine UK

Ravi Shankar was the first ambassador of Indian music, popularizing it in the West as of 1956. Throughout his long career he has raised the question of effectively  transmitting his art. Directed by Frédéric Le Clair, The Extraordinary Lesson is a documentary showing Ravi Shankar on his last visit to Europe, where he chose to give his first public music lesson at the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris. This fascinating film further documents the daily work at the Ravi Shankar Center in Delhi, India, with his followers and his daughter Anoushka, who shares her father’s purpose with equal conviction: to respect the essence of classical Indian music while opening new horizons. (2010 – France – 53mn 20)
