Macunaíma
(Brazil, 1969, 105 minutes, color, in Portuguese with English subtitles, MPAA rating: R)
Wednesday, June 17
Million Dollar Theatre
307 S. Broadway
8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.)

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the award-winning Brazilian classic based on the famous novel by Mario de Andrade. This farcical, irreverent satire follows anti-hero Macunaíma from the jungle to the city and back again. Not for the young or the faint of heart, the film uses mature themes, and sometimes graphic visuals, to poke fun at certain myths of Brazilian identity while critiquing the military regime in power at the time. Visit the http://www.lacla.org/ for past reviews of the film.

Special Program: The evening will be hosted by Sergio Mielniczenko, host and producer of the Brazilian Hour and Global Village radio shows. DJ Mochilla sets the mood before the screening with the sounds of samba, bossa nova, folk-psyck, batucada, and more, forging a musical link between the cultures of Los Angeles and Brazil.
