Info about Renni:

http://www.renniflores.com/renni.htm

Renni Flores native of Bahia, Brazil. Bahia is considered the soul and heart beat of Brazil. Renni started singing at the age of 5, and in the early 80s she became the first woman in Bahia to sing with the group Bloco Afro Ilê Aiye in carnaval. She has the full rich sound needed to sing alone with drums of northeast Brazil. From there she performed at various festivals and directed her own folkloric dance company Bahia Magia, one of Brazil's leading groups. Working with the state government, they toured worldwide.

Inspired by the richness of Bahia's African rhythms, Renni created her own style of Brazilian popular music, mixing samba-reggae, funk, reggae and rock'n roll.

Now living in Los Angeles for more than a decade, Renni has made a great contribution to the Brazilian culture and community, singing with many different ensembles. Her powerful voice and commanding stage stage presence have earned her the title of "Carnaval Queen of Bahia."

Samba Society and Trópico de Nopal Gallery invite you to an afternoon
of vintage samba in a relaxed backyard setting.

Sunday / May 23
4pm / $5
1665 Beverly Blvd, LA 90026
Info: 213- 458-6053

After playing to a packed house at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall in March we
are bringing the group to Trópico de Nopal for a traditional "roda de
samba" (informal backyard-style samba jam). The gallery's space is
beautiful, spacious, open air, and DANCING is not only allowed, it is
encouraged!!!

The return of Samba Society earlier this year was quite an event. The
vibrant Kátia Moraes and the exceptional guitarist Mitchell Long
joined us onstage as special guests and have become Samba Society
Fellows! We will be bringing to you our 12+piece band, with full vocal
harmonies, swinging percussion rhythm section, plus the traditional
sounds of the 7-string guitar and the cavaco. We will also feature
some very special guests!

DJ Reyes (and Trópico owner) will be spinning old-school samba on
vinyl!

Samba Society is a collective of musicians from the Brazilian
community of Southern California. Under the artistic direction of Beto
González, Samba Society is primarily dedicated to partido alto and
samba de terreiro. Samba Society will play a repertoire of vintage
sambas, B-sides, and arrangements of classics primarily from the 1960s
and 70s. We will feature songs by composers of the "Old Guard" of
samba that have been largely ignored by mainstream media and are
little known outside of Rio, even to Brazilians.

OLODUM  -   BRAZILIAN NITES PRODUCTIONS
presents
17th Annual Brazilian Summer Festival
featuring
OLODUM
directly from Salvador, Bahia - Brazil!
Afro-brazilian creators of Samba Reggae

Ford Amphitheatre

Brazilian Nites
17th Annual Brazilian Summer Festival
Sun. September 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
Percussion is the pulse of this year’s festival. Olodum, from
Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, is the group that created samba reggae,
combining Brazilian samba with Jamaican reggae, merengue and salsa.
They drew inspiration, both musically and ideologically, from Bob
Marley. In 2010 the 23-member percussion and dance ensemble marks the
30th year of bringing their brand of Afro-Brazilian culture to the
world.
