Grand Performances presents CARAVAN PALACE & CYRO BAPTISTA July 16 & 17 @ 8 PM  FREE CONCERT
July really heats up all over Los Angeles with Grand Performances’ weekend presentation of two groups that make the concert experience a fun ride. On Friday, July 16 @ 8 PM, Parisian sensation Caravan Palace brings its unique blend of I920’s flapper swing, Django Reinhardt-style Gypsy/jazz arrangements and generous scoops of electro pop wrapped with wacky, energetic lyrics to the main Watercourt stage. This virtuosic ensemble includes core members guitarist Arnaud Vial, violinist Hughes Payen, and double bassist Charles Delaporte – complemented with vocalist Colotis Zoé and a collage of instruments that include trombone, clarinet, looped sounds and turntables. Oh, don’t forget to check out the cool costumes that they wear on stage!
Saturday, July 17 @ 8 PM brings Brazilian master percussionist Cyro Baptista & Beat the Donkey. This traveling circus of fun’s onstage antics is propelled by the thumping heartbeat of two large Brazilian bass drums known as surdos.  Baptista gleefully conducts and roams the stage which is filled with all manner of instruments – including whistles, timbales, pots and pans, unusual self-made contraptions and long plastic tubes whirled by the entire ensemble.  The musical explosion is made even more exciting when the fabulously costumed musicians leave their instruments to break into spontaneous dance making the show an energetic, mesmerizing, virtuosic and more than engaging stage performance
.

Brazilian Nites
17th Annual Brazilian Summer Festival
Sun. September 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
Percussion is the pulse of this year’s festival. Olodum, from
Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, is the group that created samba reggae,
combining Brazilian samba with Jamaican reggae, merengue and salsa.
They drew inspiration, both musically and ideologically, from Bob
Marley. In 2010 the 23-member percussion and dance ensemble marks the
30th year of bringing their brand of Afro-Brazilian culture to the
world.
