Afro-Latin selections by REYES
plus very special guests

The music of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Brasil are close cousins, sharing a similar history of slavery and European colonization. Much of the African heritage of these cultures is attributed to West African, primarily Yoruban, origins, in large part due to the emphasis placed on the deity worship religions of santería and candomblé. However, little focus is given to the fact that the popular music and well-known round dances actually have their roots in the Central African Kingdom of Kongo, in the diverse peoples that make up the Bantu ethno-linguistic group.

Please join us in this unprecedented collaboration as we explore this esoteric lineage in a special musical interplay between these cultures. The sounds of the barriles, congas, and atabaques (the respective drums of PR/CU/BR) will summon dancers to the center of a collective circle in a celebration 400 years in the making…
