A SYMPHONY OF HOPE (MMM)

When 25 of today’s most accomplished Hollywood composers banded together to benefit the victims of 2010’s Haitian earthquake, they created Symphony of Hope, an unique masterpiece that begins with a Haitian melody and culminates in an original opus brilliantly performed by a 70-member orchestra and 40-member choir. Fresh out of the studio, the musical fundraising project premieres live on the Grand Performances’ stage in its entirety.

On Thursday August 23rd, 2012 Grupo Falso Baiano make their debut at Fullerton’s

venerable Muckenthaler Center for a very special concert featuring choro and samba

music from Brazil. Grupo Falso Baiano has been performing throughout California for

over nine years, bringing their energetic mixture of Brazilian choro, samba and jazz to

appreciative audiences everywhere. Their 2007 and 2010 releases Viajando: Choro e

Jazz and Simplicidade: Live at Yoshi’s were hailed by critics and fans. The group will be

performing songs from these albums and more, with original members Brian Moran on 7

string guitar, mandolin and cavaquinho, Zack Pitt-Smith on reeds, and percussionist Ami

Molinelli, abetted by the wonderful Brazilian vocalist Katia Moraes and L.A. based guitar

and cavaquinho player Colin Walker.

Grupo Falso Baiano is the San Francisco Bay Area’s premiere Brazilian choro group.

Choro (pronounced “SHO-roo”) is Brazil’s first national music, often compared to

ragtime, Dixieland, and jazz for its melodic, playful sound, which demands both

instrumental virtuosity and great depth of feeling. Falso Baiano’s repertoire spans over

100 years, with creative, jazz-influenced arrangements of both classic material (Jacob

do Bandolim, Pixinguinha, etc) and works by modern masters like Hermeto Pascoal and

Hamilton de Holanda.

The unique Brazilian singer and lyricist Kátia Moraes began her career in Rio de Janeiro

in the 80's with her energetic band "O Espirito da Coisa" . Since then she has performed

and/or recorded with top Brazilian acts like Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira, Oscar Castro-

Neves, Rita Lee, and many others.

Vanessa Isaac of Hip Brazil will take you on an intoxicating journey to Brazil by way of Brazil’s hottest export: dance. Learn the fundamentals of true Rio-style Samba; explore the hypnotic rhythms of Samba Reggae and the Afro Blocos da Bahia - the same rhythms that have seduced Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, and many other dancers and musicians around the world; and experience the powerful movement of contemporary Brazilian dance through Vanessa’s signature style of teaching.

The renowned UCSB Afro-Brazilian Music Ensemble will provide the hypnotic Brazilian rhythms, led by the multi-instrumental talent of Music Director Matt Wright, and Saturday night will culminate in a “Journey to Brazil” party at Red’s, with legendary party-starter DJ Fab spinning his sexy-cool Brazilian beats well into the night.

If you are seduced by the rhythms of Brazil, or if you simply love to dance, then this is not an event to be missed! All workshops will be taught by Vanessa herself.
