The Man Behind Hezboallah

Sayyad Hassan Nasrallah

“Put aside despair and arm yourselves with hope.”

In 1978 Israel occupied South Lebanon, the occupation continued for 22 years, until Hezballah, (army of God) forced the strongest power in the Middle East to leave Lebanon. Hezballah’s victory in the South became an emblem of hope throughout the Middle East.

What was the secret behind their success?  Some would say it’s the man behind the movement, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.  His charisma, organizations skills and psychological warfare tactics has turned him into an illustrious leader. In 2008 the polls showed that he was the most admired leader in the Arab world today. We will be exploring the basis of his popularity, and his contradictory record and legacy.

We will also look at identity and community, the lives of Ethiopians and Armenians, their resistance to assimilation in the midst of transformation and adaptation.

 Our guests are:

Nicholas Noe, founder and editor-in-chief of the Beirut-based news translation service mideastwire.com.  He was previously a news editor on the Lebanon Daily Star/Herald Tribune, and has written for numerous regional and international publications.

Ara Oshagan is a local photographer who explores the ambiguity of communities and Identities through his art.

Produced and hosted by Lucy DerTavitian from the SWANA collective.
