APARTHEID - From South Africa to Palestine
LA will soon be visited by South African and Palestinian anti-apartheid
activists (see below for details of program). This week, Radio Intifada will
focus on apartheid discussing how it was implemented in South Africa,
exploring if the Israeli occupation is different from apartheid, and
examining if Israel is itself an apartheid state. We will also discuss the
efficacy of the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaigns against South
Africa and the status of the Palestinian campaign.

Separate is Never Equal - Stories of Apartheid national speaking tour will be in Los Angeles on November 18 and 19th, featuring Rev. Eddie Makue and Diana Buttu (see below). They are seeking to educate Americans about the similitarities between life under South Africa’s apartheid regime and life for Israelis and Palestinians living under the Israeli government’s ethnic separation policies.

Diana Buttu was raised in Canada and moved to Palestine in 2000 to work for the Negotiations Support Unit of the PLO. Ms. Buttu was also involved in litigation at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, which resulted in their landmark opinion against Israel’s wall.
Rev. Eddie Makue worked with social and political organizations to fight racist poicies throughout the 1980s and worked to prepare his fellow South Africans for truly democratic elections in the 1990s. In 2006, Rev. Makue was appointed to his current position as General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches.
