Fine artists from the Arab/Muslim world perform in the words and spirit
of 13th-century Sufi poet/mystic Jaladin Rumi.
Elie Karam is an accomplished playwright and theatre director from Beirut, Lebanon whose plays have been performed in Europe, the U.S. and the Middle East. The author of such critical hits as "Off With Your Hat" and "Tell Me About the War So That I'll Love You," Karam reads poetry in Arabic.
Tony Khalife is a child of war. His music—a soulful blend of Middle Eastern, flamenco and Indian folk/world styles—grew out of his Lebanese upbringing, his travels and the new life he carved for himself in Southern California. Raised in Beirut during the civil war that raged there 1975-1991, Khalife is a musician, singer, songwriter, composer, yogi, artist and teacher. He contributes an original performance at KPFK's NoHo studios. More at tonykhalife.com.
Raya Meddine Née Rana Alamuddin, Raya Meddine is a Lebanese American actress, TV host and writer. Born in New York to a diplomatic family, she spent her childhood and teenage years traveling around the world and connecting with different cultures. Among her latest projects are a guest-starring role on CSI Miami and the series regular role of Sabrina Costelana on America’s #1 daytime TV drama The Young and the Restless. (2008) She played one of the lead roles in the Lebanese feature film Bosta, which competed in the Foreign Language Category at the 2007 Academy Awards. In 2007, in an effort to promote dialogue and shatter stereotypes about the Middle East, Raya joined the Los Angeles-based stand-up comedy troupe Sultans of Satire. In 2006, she hosted the first season of the hit Pan-Arab reality show Mission Fashion with celebrity designer Elie Saab. That same year, she performed the lead role in the critically acclaimed play To Hell with Meryl Streep at the Rond-Point Theater in Paris. She performs poetry in French.
Necar Zadegan, who was born in Iran, has been working professionally as an actress since she was 16, in the States and abroad. She attended UCSB on a performance scholarship and graduated with degrees in literature and writing. She has since been traveling the world on a theatrical tour with Workshop 79 thru 3 continents performing the Farsi language show "Az Mahvareh Bah Eshgh" and spent the last two years doing work for television on shows like "Nip/Tuck," "The Unit," "NCIS," "How I Met Your Mother," "The Shield,"Big Shots", "General Hospital" and "Lost". She was most recently seen in the Adam Sandler flick You Don't Mess With The Zohan" as well as the indie festival play "The Touch" which was recently accepted in over 30 festivals worldwide. She was nominated this year for an LA Weekly Award for her work in the Boston Court production of Gilgamesh and recently closed her one-Amazon-woman show at the Powerhouse Theater in Santa Monica. Necar Zadegan performs in English and Farsi.
