Algeria and Egypt: Elections and Prospects for Democracy

This week Radio Intifada will explore questions about the practice of democracy in Algeria and Egypt first focusing on the recent Algerian presidential elections and then on the prospects for real democratic change in Egypt.

Discussion of Algerian elections with Professor Basheer Idoui, Grossmont College:

Why did the opposition boycott the elections? How free and fair were they? How did President Abdelaziz Bouteflika managed to amend the Constitution without a popular referendum as required by law? Where is Algeria heading after this elections?
Discussion of EGYPT TODAY with Dina Guirguis, Voices for a Democratic Egypt; Cameel Halim, Coptic Assembly of America;
Safei Hamed, Alliance of Egyptian Americans
What is the possibility for real democratic change? What do Egyptians want? What are the issues? What is being done inside Egypt and here in the US to usher in democracy?  What are the obstacles? Who is paying the price? What does the future hold?
Co-produced/co-hosted by Hamoud Salhi and Nile El Wardani, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective
