Empire, Militarization and Occupation

From Algeria to Iraq

This week, Radio Intifada will feature Professors Marnia Lazreg and Catherine Lutz to discuss strategies of war, from Algeria to Iraq. Join us as we discuss the uses of torture, and the recruitment of cultural anthropologists in the current war on terror.

Catherine Lutz, is currently the Matina S. Horner Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. Her research focuses on questions of militaries, war, and society. Her most recent publication is titled: The Bases of Empire: The Struggle against US Military Posts (ed.). London: Pluto Press (with The Transnational Institute), 2008.

Marnia Lazreg, is a Professor in the Sociology Department at Hunter College, the City University of New York. Her books include The Eloquence of Silence: Algerian Women in Question and most recent, Torture and the Twilight of Empire: From Algiers to Baghdad, 2007.
