“. . . is there a possibility that a fascist regime might come to power in Israel?”
Israeli Zionist peace activist, Uri Avnery, 4/23/09
Today, the answer is becoming clear. Palestinian citizens of Israel are being imprisoned for their political work, physically attacked on the floor of the Knesset for joining the Gaza flotilla, and facing a growing body of laws that can only be characterized as racist and anti-democratic. These new laws also restrict Jewish Israeli peace and justice activists who support the BDS movement.
In this week’s program, we will discuss the arrest and detention of Ittijah director, Ameer Makhoul,* who Amnesty International (AI) has suggested is a prisoner of conscience;” and the range of repressive measures being proposed and implemented by the Israeli government.Guests:
Janan Abdu (Makhoul), Ameer's self-described parner in living and activism, Janan Abdu is a social and feminist activist and researcher at Mada-al-Carmel. Her latest book (in Arabic) is Palestinian Women’s and feminist NGOs within the 1948 Green Line.
Hassan Jabareen is the founder the director of Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, which is handling Ameer Makhoul’s case. A widely published author on citizenship, and constitutionalism, he regularly argues before the Israeli Supreme Court on behalf of his clients.
Dalit Baum is feminist activist and scholar and member of the Boycott from Within campaign and the Coalition of Women for Peace. She is the project coordinator of “Who Profits from the Occupation.”

"Ameer Makhoul is a key human rights defender, well-known for his civil society activism on behalf of the Palestinian citizens of Israel. Philip Luther, Deputy Director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Programme commented "His arrest and continued detention smacks of pure harassment, designed to hinder his human rights work. If this is the case, we would regard him as a prisoner of conscience call for his immediate and unconditional release."
