This week, Radio Intifada focuses on Iran. Recently a group of Americans active in the progressive movement met with Iranian President Ahmadinejad, calling him and his government "Grassroots activists," ignoring how his government continues to violently suppress any opposition to its heavy handed rule.
Meanwhile, a long awaited conference on the role of ideology and citizenship in Iran, since 1979 to the Green Movement, will be happening in LA on October 9th.
We will be speaking with human rights activist, Elahe Amani, about the dangers of supporting an oppressive apparatus only for its displayed "anti-imperialist" tendencies. We will then speak with one of the organizers' of the Iran Ideology Conference and explore the various aspect of this conference and its main objective.
Our guests are:
Elahe Amani : A human rights, peace and social justice activist. Until recently she served as the Chair of Coalition of women from Asia and the Middle East and currently is the co-chair of the Women’s Intercultural Network; a global organization based in San Francisco. She works closely with the Iranian human rights defenders and is on the board of the Southern California’s Society for Support of Human Rights in Iran. Elahe, a trained mediator who works closely with Mediators Beyond Boarders, is well published both in English and Persian and works closely with Iranian activist inside Iran.
Narges Bajoghli : Is a doctoral student in Anthropology at New York University. She holds an MA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. Her research concerns war, veterans, and media in Iran. She is one of the three organizers of the upcoming Iran Ideology Conference.
