THE ARAB REVOLUTIONS/REVOLTS/UPRISINGS

and the Western vision and response

In the past two months, we have witnessed demonstrations and uprisings in the Arab world from North Africa to the Gulf. Now, the eyes of the world are on Libya, where rebel forces are in control of large swaths of the country. In response to Gaddafi's attempted suppression of this revolt, the US Secretary of State is advocating considerably harsher measures than were approved by the UN Security Council and has taken a decidedly interventionist stand.

In today's Fund Drive Special,* after our special news report from SWANA member/political scientist Hamoud Salhi, we will be exploring the meaning and implications of these uprisings and the Western vision and response.  Are we talking about revolution(s)? or simply regime change? What role is labor playing, especially in Egypt? What is the alternative to interventionism in Libya?

Guest:

John Rees, co-founder of the Stop the War Coalition in England and a member of the editorial board of the online magazine Counterfire has recently returned from Cairo and Tunis. His 21 minute documentary, Egypt: Inside the Revolution can be seen on your tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9L0rkjDIGA&feature=watch_response
John Pilger said of Rees: "I know of few who speak and write more wisely of the danger we face from rapacious power, and what we should do about it. . .. "
