Modeled on the US Freedom Ride of fifty years ago, on November 15th, six courageous Palestinian youths challenged Israeli apartheid. They boarded the Veolia-operated bus from Ramallah to Jerusalem that is reserved for Jewish settlers as it crosses through Palestinian occupied lands on segregated roads. Of course, they were arrested, but thankfully did not face the brutal jail experience of our own Freedom Riders.
In solidarity with the Palestinian Freedom Riders, activists in the BDS movement around the country (boycott/divestment/sanctions) engaged in a variety of actions. Here in Los Angeles, where Veolia has the contract for the DASH buses in downtown LA, 10 teams boarded those buses and spoke with the passengers.
Huwaida Arraf, one of the arrested Freedom Riders is a Palestinian lawyer and human rights advocate and a co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement: http://palsolidarity.org/
Marsha Steinberg, one of the organizers of the LA solidarity action, is long time activist and a member of BDS-LA: bdsla4justiceinPalestine.org
Guest host, Sherna Berger Gluck, is one of the (California) Israel Divestment Campaign state coordinators: israeldivestmentcampaign.org
