9/07/06 Iran: The Nuclear Stand-Off and the Current Political Situation
Host Afshin Matin will interview Professor Sasan Fayazmanesh on the possibility of UN sanctions and or US-Israeli military actions against Iran. In the second segment, Iranian activist and Ph.D. candidate, Niki Akhavan, will discuss the current political situation in Iran under President Ahmadinezhad.

9/15/06 - THE LIFE AND WORK OF NAGUIB MAHFOUZ : EGYPTIAN NOVELIST AND HUMANIST WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE

A MEMORIAL: MAHFOUZ left behind a literary and human legacy we can all learn from. In his life and work (spanning 94 years) he sought human understanding, acceptance of the "other" and above all peace. Four Egyptian novelists who knew Mahfouz and felt his influence join us.

Dr. Mohamed Salmawy, “President of the Egyptian Writers Union, editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram Hebdo, playwright, novelist, columnist, critic and political commentator. Mahfouz’s official spokesperson in the latter days of his life.

Dr. Somaya Ramadan, Woman Novelist and winner of the AUC Naguib Mahouz Medal for Literature for novel The Leaves of Narcissus. Journalist and founding member of the Women and Memory Forum an NGO working on the history of women in the Arab World.

Hala El Badri, Egyptian woman novelist. Her novel Montaahâ is published by the AUC Press.

Youssef Abu Raya - Novelist and winner of the AUC Naguib Mahouz Medal for Literature for his novel The Wedding Night. The novel will be released 11 December 2006 on the birthday of Naguib Mahfouz in Cairo by AUC Press.

9/21/06 - State Terrorism and Human Rights Violations: 5 Years after 9/11

The South Asian region has been of much significance over the last 5 years, as the invasion of Afghanistan advances the US to South Asia’s doorstep in ways unlike any other in recorded history. What are the larger implications that the war on terror has had on the geopolitical situation of South Asia? Today, we’ll peek into this larger question at hand, beginning a series of discussions in future South Asian segments of Radio Intifada concerning the US stronghold and wrangling in the South Asian region. We begin this conversation on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 as a basic perspective on the rise in State Terrorism and the Violation of Human Rights.

It is six years since the start of the 2nd Intifada in 2000. Since then, a new election gave Hamas an overwhelming victory and the international community has punished Palestinians for exercising their democratic rights. Today, the struggle for survival and authority has produced more and more internal violence, at the same time that the Israeli occupiers continue to assault Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. We will be talking about the current situation and assessing the 2nd Intifada.

At such turbulent times in the Middle East, Radio Intifada is particularly pleased to bring you a sane voice for a just peace. This week, our guests are a Palestinian and an Israeli Jew, who are members of a newly formed organization, "Combatants for Peace". This organization brings together erstwhile paticipants in a violent conflict, who have now come together to call for cooperation, coexistence, and a just peace achieved through non-violent means.

Suleiman Khatib, our Palestinian guest, spent 10 years in an Israeli jail for having attempted to stab an Israelli soldier when he was 14. Yonatan Shapira, our Israeli guest, served as a helicopter pilot in the Israeli army, where he was involved in numerous rescue and transportation missions. They will share with us stories of their own personal journey, as well as their perspective on their respective societies, on the conflict, on and on the route to a just peace in the Middle East.

The “Rains of Summer” assault on Gaza, interrupted briefly for Israel’s war on Lebanon, has been resumed in an even more brutal fashiondubbed now “Rains of Autumn.” This latest military assault is but one dimension of the much broader war against Palestinians. The economic and demographic wars, while less visible are also designed to break the spirit of the Palestinian people, and destroy any hope of their ever building a free and democratic society.

Joining us to discuss the military, economic and demographic war are residents under attack in Gaza and the West Bank, Dr. Mona Elfaraa and Sam Bahour, and Palestinian American political scientist/analyst, Professor Naseer Aruri.

Brian Becker, the national coordinator of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition and a frequent voice of the anti-war movement appearing on CNN, MSN, PBS and other mass media. Becker has co-authored several books on the effects of the economic sanctions on the people of Iraq.

Michel Shehadeh, a long time Palestinian American activist and one of the defendants in the 20 year old case of the Los Angeles 8. Shehadeh is regularly publishes in the U.S. and the Middle East an analysis of current issues affecting Palestinians and Arab Americans.

12/28/06 The Past, Present and Future of India's Revolutionary Movements

The current land rights movement in a village known as Singur has rocked the State government of West Bengal, as peasants have been waging a fierce battle against the presumably leftist State government, the police and India’s corporate elite. The people of Singur come from a long and rich legacy of revolutionary struggles, one of which, the Naxalite movement, will be recalled and assessed at its present level by Southern California's own prominent South Asian Historian. A third interview will discuss the future of revolutionary movements in India, the lessons learned, and the hope and belief for people’s power that continues on in the face of on-going neo-liberal and globalization processes.

+ Sumit Chowdhury, filmmaker and activist, Kolkata, West Bengal, will discuss the recent campaign against corporate land acquistion in the Singur village
