THE NEW GREAT GAME
OIL and CENTRAL ASIA
PAST AND PRESENT

As oil supplies dwindle in the Middle East and OPEC's monopoly in the industry threatens our economy, Central Asia with its great energy security and diversified oil supply has become a strategic importance not just for the US, but all the main players in the world.
Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan alone sit on more than 130 billion barrels of oil, Turkmenistan's gas reserve are among the top ten in the world with possible reserves up to 260 trillion cubes.
This Thursday on Radio Intifada we will cover the proposed pipelines running through the Caspian and the countries it baits; Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia,Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, India, Iran, China, Russia and Afghanistan. Is the New Great Game a matter of oil or reconfiguration of power for a pivotal region?

We'll also trace back 16 Centuries to EAST OF BYZANTIUM, where an epic film puts us in the midst of the Persian and Byzantium empire. By exploring the history and legend of one specific peoples, the Armenians we gain an understanding of the creation of a region which gave birth to a monumental past and a fertile future.

Our guests are:

Hovann Simonian, author of Troubled Waters: The Geopolitics of the Caspian region and The Hemshin: History, society and Identity in the Highlands of North East Turkey.

Roger Kupelina: Director of "East of Byzantium."

This show is hosted and produced by Lucy DerTavitian from the SWANA Collective.
