TURKEY: Legal Challenge to Ruling Islamist
AKP Party
Radio Intifada is presenting a two-part program on Turkey, whose military rulers are Washington's staunch supporters and the recipients of billions of dollars in US aid and arms. While the Constitutional Court is deliberating on shutting down the ruling AK (Justice and Development) Party on charges of non-secular activities, Turkish media is in a frenzy over the investigation of Ergenkone, an ultra-nationalist clandestine group linked to the Turkish armed forces.
In this first program, we will cover Operation Ergenekon and its structure, ties with the armed forces and coup against the government; a historical perspective on Operation Ergenekon and the AKP- closure case; and rise of neo-nationalist gangs in turkey and their ties to Armenian journalist Hrant Dink's assassination.
Guests:
Dr. Ahmad Farhadi, Middle East Studies, New York University
Siyar Ozsoy, former adviser to the Mayor of Diyarbakir (in Northern Kurdistan/southeastern Turkey) and PhD candidate in Anthropology
This topic will be continued next week on Radio Intifada with an additional guest
Produced and hosted by Nyma Ardalan, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective of KPFK
