Moving into the New Year seems an appropriate time to look back at the things left behind and, especially, to pay tribute to those no longer with us in physical form, yet will remain in our hearts and minds forever. Today, we feature Celestine Ware's interview with the great Odetta (first aired on KPFK April 14, 1971).  Although much has changed since 1971, Odetta's observations and reminiscences are well worth hearing again.  The magical matriarch of folk music, often called the "Voice of the Civil Rights Movement," Odetta passed away on December2, 2008.  More than a singer/songwriter, she was a force of nature.  The beauty of her voice and magnitude of her presence render her contribution to American music and culture inestimable. Undoubtedly, when President-elect Barack Obama is inaugurated on January 20, 2009, Odetta will be singing from the heavens on the other side.
