PACIFICA PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE
AIRDATE:  1/08/10, 2:30 - 3:00 pm
GUEST: Tony Award Winning Director, Bartlett Sher

Considered by many one of the great American playwrights with “Waiting for Lefty,” “Golden Boy,” and “Sweet Smell of Success,” among others, Clifford Odets’ 1935 classic “Awake And Sing” revolves around the Berger family – their relationships and anxieties while coping with the uncertain economics of the Great Depression. Staged as a radio drama by L.A. Theatre Works, this production includes an all-star cast with, among others, actors Mark Ruffalo and Ben Gazarra, from the recent Broadway revival. Directed by Barlett Sher (Tony Award winner for “South Pacific”, nominated for “Light in the Piazza” among others), it is more relevant than ever. We discuss Odets’ strange, profound, and complicated career and the continuing relevance of his work today. We also discuss Sher’s directorial approach and his work with mentor Garland Wright, Peter Hall, and Andre Bishop of Lincoln Center.
