Summer 2010 Southern California Ukulele and other events
Hope everybody is having a great Summer. It's been a little overcast lately, but a ukulele can brighten up any day!
Here's a few things coming up you may find interesting, more to come!
Thursday July 8th 11:15 am (PST) though 1 pm "The Global Village" on KPFK 90.7 FM (98.7 FM Santa Barbara) and online at http://www.kpfk.org
How did the Baka Pygmies of Cameroon influence the top R & B groups in France?
And how did a Surf Guitar classic lay down the foundation for hip-hop and rap?
Find out July 8th when I'll be sitting in for John Schneider on KPFK. In the first hour we explore the haunting chants and songs of the Baka tribes of central Africa, then to West Africa for an amazing Ethiopian Hip-hop project, north to Egypt and North Africa we get a taste of the modern hybrid Arabic fusion and finally to Paris where the Baka - R & B connections created one of the biggest hits on the French and US R&B charts.

Then in the second hour I'm joined live by two masters of the surf guitar, Paul Johnson of the Surfaris and the Belairs and Gil Orr of the Chantays who have combined forces to create the Duo-Tones. A unique exploration into surf guitar classics done predominantly on two acoustic guitars. We'll hear some surf guitar history and I'll reveal a classic surf song that laid the beat for 100's of rap and hip-hop tunes!
The Duo-Tones will be playing on Sunday July 11th in El Segundo at

The Duo-Tones
Two MASTERS of the SURF GUITAR have joined forces to create a unique variation on the original theme: by leaving out the drums and bass, they put the focus on their delightful dual-guitar interplay, bringing fresh appeal to the surf-instro genre.
PAUL JOHNSON pioneered surf-instro music in the '60s with the Belairs; his tune, "Mr. Moto," is a genre classic. Now, after a lifetime of prolific creativity in a style that epitomizes the form, he's regarded as one of the genre's leading lights. (Paul has been a Surfari since 1989.)
GIL ORR was a child prodigy in the '50's playing country music on TV and radio. He took to rock 'n roll in the '60's and joined the Chantays (with whom he still plays to this day). Gil is extremely versatile and eclectic, bringing a brilliant creativity to a wide variety of styles.
To find out more about the Duo-Tones, visit their website: http://www.pjmoto.com/specialty/duo_tones.php

ALOHAFEST! SONGS & DANCES FROM PARADISE
ENCHANTING MUSIC AND DANCE FROM THE PACIFIC
COMES TO HOLLYWOOD AT THE  JOHN ANSON FORD
ESCAPE TO POLYNESIA with "AlohaFest! Songs & Dances from Paradise" and experience the exciting, pulse-pounding rhythms of Tahitian drums, the majesty of ancient Hawaiian chant and the unique sounds of contemporary Hawaiian music in one spellbinding concert that celebrates Polynesian history and tradition.  Over 100 dancers and musicians take the stage at the historic John Anson Ford on Sunday, August 15 at 7:00pm  to reveal the cultures of the Pacific.
The evening begins with a performance of kahiko, the ancient hula and chant of Hawaii as presented by award-winning halau Hula Halau O Lilinoe.  The power and beauty of the kahiko is combined with the oli (chant) of ancient stories that have been handed down through generations of Hawaiians. The dances are performed using the syncopated rhythms of Hawaiian indigenous instruments such as the pahu and ipu.
Tahiti is the final stop on this musical journey. Award-winning Nonosina Polynesia also makes its Ford debut with the excitement and splendor of Tahitian music and dance.  Set to the hard-driving, pulsating sounds of indigenous to'ere (drums) are the rapid oteas  and aparimas performed by the dancers and musicians of Nonosina.
Tickets for "AlohaFest!" are $27.00 and $12.00 for full-time students with ID and children 12 and under and can be purchased from the Ford box office at http://www.fordtheatres.org or 323-461-3673 (for non-visual media 323-GO 1-FORD).   Through the Ford's early buyer incentive, adults who buy tickets on or before August 8 pay only $22.00.
