Thursday July 8th Global Village Playlist and Info

Ali Lexa sitting in for John Schneider

How did the Baka Tribes of Cameroon influence the top R & B groups in France?
And how did a Surf Guitar classic lay down the foundation for hip-hop and rap?
Find out tomorrow when I'll be sitting in for John Schneider on KPFK. In the first hour we explore the haunting chants and songs of the Baka tribes of central Africa, then to West Africa for an amazing Ethiopian Hip-hop project, north to Egypt and North Africa we get a taste of the modern hybrid Arabic fusion and finally to Paris where the Baka - R & B connections created one of the biggest hits on the French and US R&B charts.

Les Nubians will be performing at the Conga Room Thur Sept 16th
AFROPEAN HIP HOP/R&B DUO
Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 8:00 PM

800 W. Olympic Blvd. Suite A160

Then in the second hour we were joined live by two masters of the surf guitar, Paul Johnson of the Surfaris and the Belairs and Gil Orr of the Chantays who have combined forces to create the Duo-Tones. A unique exploration into surf guitar classics done predominantly on two acoustic guitars. We'll hear some surf guitar history and I'll reveal a classic surf song that laid the beat for 100's of rap and hip-hop tunes!
The Duo-Tones will be playing on Sunday July 11th in El Segundo at Old Town Music Hall

Duo Tones

The Duo-Tones will be playing on Sunday July 11th in El Segundo
Sunday, 11 July 2010 7PM
The Duo-Tones
Two MASTERS of the SURF GUITAR have joined forces to create a unique variation on the original theme: by leaving out the drums and bass, they put the focus on their delightful dual-guitar interplay, bringing fresh appeal to the surf-instro genre.
PAUL JOHNSON pioneered surf-instro music in the '60s with the Belairs; his tune, "Mr. Moto," is a genre classic. Now, after a lifetime of prolific creativity in a style that epitomizes the form, he's regarded as one of the genre's leading lights. (Paul has been a Surfari since 1989.)
GIL ORR was a child prodigy in the '50's playing country music on TV and radio. He took to rock 'n roll in the '60's and joined the Chantays (with whom he still plays to this day). Gil is extremely versatile and eclectic, bringing a brilliant creativity to a wide variety of styles.
To find out more about the Duo-Tones, visit their website: http://www.pjmoto.com/specialty/duo_tones.php
Tickets are $20, call to reserve: 310-322-2592.
