Long Beach Funk Fest - Battle of the Bands
Saturday July 30th at 9:00 PM
The Blue Cafe - Long Beach 217 Pine Ae., Long Beach, CA 90802
Local bands will compete to win the opening showcase slot for the 3rd Long Beach Funk Fest which takes place Aug 20th on the streets in downtown Long Beach. Each competing band must bring a minimum of 25 fans to the show. Bands are judged based on musicianship, songs, vibe, crowd response, and of course, their funkiness.

There are still spots open for bands that would like to try out! Contact bobby@lbfunkfest.com

Other Events-

West Hollywood: The Sunset Strip Music Festival
This year's honorees, Motley Crue, return to their old stomping grounds after a stop at the Bowl earlier this summer. But it's not all hair metal. On Saturday, the Crue takes the outdoor stage along with unlikely warmups from political power-fighters Public Enemy and hipster drum and keyboard duo Matt & Kim.
Thu-Sat Aug 18-20. Multiple
West Hollywood locations. $55 and up

Downtown: Hard Summer Music Festival
The dance music tour is usually just DJ beats blending into a bleary-eyed, all-night rave. Two acts make the LA stop noteworthy: James Murphy and Pat Mahoney of the recently deceased LCD Soundsystem perform together, and bug-eating horror-hip-hop sensations Odd Future are also on the bill.
Sat Aug 6. 1245 N. Spring
St., Downtown. $70 and up here.

Orange County: Pacific Festival
A true kitchen sink mix. You've got the breathy female vocals and floaty synths of Phantogram, the folk-punk of Black Lips, and the trippy rhythms of Aussie electronic wizards Cut Copy. And then there's the headliner — Snoop Dog. Pack a cooler of 40s.
Sat Aug 13.
Oak Canyon Ranch, 5305 Santiago Canyon Rd., Silverado. $75 and up here.

FREE FESTIVALS-

The sixth annual Venice Beach Music Fest is a fun day of music and art at the beach on Saturday, August 13, 2011. This event, which is free to the public, continues its tradition of keeping the creative spirit of Venice vibrant by creating a venue for local musicians, dancers, poets, and artists.

This kid and family class will show you just what to do with that shiny new instrument! We'll start with simple 2- and 3-chord songs that will have everyone playing in the first lesson. Parents can accompany kids five and up, while kids eight and older are welcome on their own. Even parents are welcome on their own! Got a song you just have to play? Suggest it, and we'll work it out with you!
