Unprecedented Coverage of Sunday's Mexican Presidential Elections

from a Progressive Perspective

Eight Hours of Bilingual Coverage on Election Day, July 1, 2012

June 29, 2012 – North Hollywood, CA. 90.7 KPFK Radio announces special coverage of Sunday's Mexican National Election, in which a new President and Congress will be elected. The July 1, 2012, coverage will be produced by a team of news and public affairs producers who oversee the Spanish-language programming heard on the politically progressive Pacifica Radio station, with coverage from 12pm to 2pm PDT; and again from 6pm (when polls close across Mexico) through midnight, when the first election results will be announced.

KPFK's coverage, besides being more extensive than any other locally produced coverage, will be distinctive because of willingness to expose not only the wide-spread corruption of the Mexican political system, but also place that corruption in an historical context as well as a regional context, that will include analysis of the role played by Mexico's northern neighbor and the impacts felt by both documented and undocumented Mexicans who reside there.

Most national polls predict that Enrique Peña Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) will recapture the Presidency for a party that ruled Mexico uninterrupted for most of the 20th Century, until it was finally defeated in 2000 by the conservative National Action Party (PAN). However, the candidate of the progressive Left, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), is thought by some to be within range to pull off an upset win. Ló pez-Obrador's candidacy received an unexpected boost from the growth of a powerful student movement "Yo Soy 132" that sprung up over the past two months to capture the nation's attention as it decries the corruption of the Mexican political system in general and Peña Nieto's role in that corruption in particular. The rise of "Yo Soy 132" has made the outcome of Sunday's election far from certain.

Two production teams will be working on KPFK's coverage on Sunday, including Telemundo TV’s Rubén Luengas, host of KPFK’s Contragolpe. Luengas will report from Mexico City, with U.S.-based anchors Ernesto Arce of the KPFK Newsroom and Professor Miguel Tinker Salas from Pomona College. The other team will consist of many of KPFK’s long-time hosts from the Spanish-language programming bloc, including activist journalists Rubén Tapia, Fernando Velázquez and Rodrigo Argueta, of the show Enfoque Latino, Informativo Pacifica and Voces de Libertad, respectively.

Rodney King: The Last Word

Uncensored on KPFK

KPFK 90.7 will air one of the final interviews given by Rodney King.

June 25, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA. KPFK Radio will broadcast perhaps one of the last interviews granted by Rodney King before his untimely death on June 17, 2012. The interview was recorded on May 10, 2012, for future broadcast, intended to be a 1-hour special edition of “Sojourner Truth” hosted by Margaret Prescod. The interview will serve as a reflection on the impact of the beating that sparked the 1992 LA Rebellion, one of the largest urban rebellions in U.S. history, and lead to the departure of then Police Chief Darryl Gates as well as the implementation of a civilian panel for the review of police misconduct. The broadcast will air Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 7am PDT on 90.7 FM, and via internet at www.KPFK.org.

“When I think of the way I was beat within an inch of my life…it makes me think of those who went before me…who stood up…who made the way for me.  I’m gonna go way back to the slaves and how they were beat….we are not where we used to be but we are definitely not where we supposed to be.”    -  Rodney King.

Rodney King talks about the beating, the long- term injuries, and the flashbacks and nightmares he suffered as a result. He comments on the Trayvon Martin murder, and on compassion, love, justice and forgiveness.

“[You have to] wake up each day on a positive note and stay on it, make each day better than it was yesterday.  We have to get away from hate.  I want everybody to get along, do the work of getting along. I look forward to the whole world getting along.” – Rodney King.

The Scholars’ Circle Returns to Sundays at 12:30pm on KPFK 90.7

March 9, 2012 – North Hollywood, CA. Pacifica Radio KPFK 90.7 announces the return of The Scholars’ Circle to the Sunday public affairs line-up, delivering analysis by a roundtable of academics and hosted by Maria Armoudian, herself a political scientist and author of Kill the Messenger: The Media's Role in the Fate of the World.

The Scholars’ Circle is unique among public radio shows for its format and focus. Each week Armoudian convenes some of the sharpest minds in academia to explain the intricacies of today’s political, social, economic and environmental issues. The historical context of current affairs in a long-form radio format brings to listeners an exceptional educational radio experience.

Says Armoudian, “We look at the history and the evolution of ideas; the incremental and critical thought; the phenomena behind what has led us to where we are, and possible solutions to big issues. I learn something new in every program, and I try to pass that on.”

The Scholars’ Circle airs Sundays at 12:30pm following Armoudian’s half-hour, The Insighters, an in-depth public affairs program on today’s pressing issues. It is part of a compelling Sunday schedule that includes Middle East in Focus with Don Bustany (9am); World Focus with Blase Bonpane (10am); Background Briefing with Ian Masters (11am); and Free Forum with Terrence McNally at 1pm.
