The Scholars’ Circle Returns to Sundays at 12:30pm on KPFK 90.7

March 9, 2012 – North Hollywood, CA. Pacifica Radio KPFK 90.7 announces the return of The Scholars’ Circle to the Sunday public affairs line-up, delivering analysis by a roundtable of academics and hosted by Maria Armoudian, herself a political scientist and author of Kill the Messenger: The Media's Role in the Fate of the World.

The Scholars’ Circle is unique among public radio shows for its format and focus. Each week Armoudian convenes some of the sharpest minds in academia to explain the intricacies of today’s political, social, economic and environmental issues. The historical context of current affairs in a long-form radio format brings to listeners an exceptional educational radio experience.

Says Armoudian, “We look at the history and the evolution of ideas; the incremental and critical thought; the phenomena behind what has led us to where we are, and possible solutions to big issues. I learn something new in every program, and I try to pass that on.”

The Scholars’ Circle airs Sundays at 12:30pm following Armoudian’s half-hour, The Insighters, an in-depth public affairs program on today’s pressing issues. It is part of a compelling Sunday schedule that includes Middle East in Focus with Don Bustany (9am); World Focus with Blase Bonpane (10am); Background Briefing with Ian Masters (11am); and Free Forum with Terrence McNally at 1pm.

http://www.clubnokia.com/eventdetail.php?id=35347

The event starts with a VIP reception and silent auction from 5 to 7 pm. The show starts at 8 pm with a line-up that will feature a host of prolific and poetic artists. The confirmed list of performers and guest speakers include Jackson Browne, John Densmore (The Doors), Billy Childs , Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith, Nailah Porter, Lili Haydn Rock DJ Jim Ladd, Josh Haden with Spain, John Trudell, Joe Rafael, The Haden Triplets and Jack Black with a special youth performance by the 32nd Street Jazz Band. Richard Montoya of Culture Clash, LeRoy Downs and Roger Guenveur Smith are our hosts for the evening. Brian Jackson, long-time collaborator with Gil Scott-Heron, will be on deck as Music Director. Other invited guests include Ozomatli, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Ravi Coltrane and Flying Lotus.

The KPFK Hero Awards and Tribute launched May 1, 2011, honoring Jazz legend Billy Higgins. The idea for the series was the result of an inspiration from KPFK Music Director
Maggie LePique. She wanted to honor music icons that had an outstanding commitment to music. LePique thought it would be relevant for KPFK 90.7 to mark the upcoming 10th anniversary of Higgins’ death by celebrating his life and body of work. She enlisted Kasey Lovelace, Music Consultant and friend of the Higgins family to develop the idea into a full-scale event. Catalina Popescu, owner of Catalina Bar and Grill, honored her long friendship with LePique and Higgins by donating her world-renowned venue for the tribute by Higgins’ esteemed contemporaries Stanley Clarke, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Kenny Burrell, with Music Director John Beasley, among others who performed to a “standing room only” audience. The demand from both the music and public affairs community has prompted the station to continue this event as an annual award series.

KPFK 90.7 FM is a member station of the Pacifica Radio network and the Pacifica Foundation, which consists of five radio stations, over 100 affiliate stations, and the Pacifica Radio Archives, responsible for preserving the voices of artists, activists and progressive journalists since 1949, when the foundation was established by peace activist Lewis Hill. To further peace through broadcasting activities, Hill determined that radio sponsored by individual listeners would be the best way to ensure editorial freedom. The KPFK Hero Awards and Tribute is a means to both raise funds and advance the Pacifica Mission.

Energy Upgrade California!

The County of Los Angeles has created the Energy Champions program to encourage non-profit organizations to promote the Energy Upgrade message for the good of our communities and the environment, while serving as an innovative way for non-profits to raise money by introducing energy efficiency upgrades to homeowners in the area. KPFK Radio would like to be YOUR Energy Champion – and when you upgrade, the radio station is supported as well!

Energy Champ Side Banner

As an Energy Champion, KPFK will “champion” the cause of saving energy by reaching out to our community network, by generating interest and providing information about residential energy efficiency rebates of up to $4,500. Eligible homeowners can be members, donors, sponsors, family, friends, or neighbors of an Energy Champion’s organization, who will identify KPFK 90.7 as their Energy Champion as they go through the “Energy Upgrade California” program. Los Angeles County has set aside over $3 million in incentive funds for Energy Champions, and there is no limit to how much money each Energy Champion may earn. The program will last until all funding has been dispersed.

Energy Upgrade California is a statewide program, adopted by Los Angeles County, to help homeowners:
•    Receive up to $8,000 in rebates and incentives to offset the cost of a home energy upgrade
•    Save money by reducing utility bills
•    Improve indoor air quality and personal comfort
•    Increase a home’s value based on the higher demand for energy-efficient properties

KPFK will receive $100 for each Basic Upgrade and $500 for each Advanced Upgrade completed by a homeowner that provides KPFK’s energy champion ID# PAC085 during the application process. There's also the new Flex Path Program and KPFK will receive $100 for each program completed. These funds will be reserved at the time a participating homeowner starts an energy upgrade and will be sent to KPFK when the energy upgrade is completed. Go to the Homeowner Action Form (HAF) and insert KPFK's energy champion ID number.

More details about the program Energy Upgrade California (Los Angeles)…

Energy Champions are acting in a marketing capacity for Energy Upgrade California Los Angeles. The above listed payment of $100 or $500 to the Energy Champion is not a charitable contribution. The payment is earned from their marketing efforts; therefore this Energy Champion must be responsible for introducing you to the Energy Upgrade California program to receive payment. This program prohibits the selection of an Energy Champion after you have met with a contractor.
Energy Upgrade California connects you with qualified professionals who have the tools and training to help make your home more energy efficient.

Participating contractors and raters are trained to provide the highest level of service from state programs, utility companies and nationally recognized home performance and green building organizations. Rigorous quality assurance systems ensure that their work meets the standards for each of the programs offered by Energy Upgrade California.

Starting Your Project
You can start your project by working with a home energy rater to receive an official certificate of your home’s energy efficiency, or work directly with a participating contractor to plan and complete your energy upgrade.

All contractors participating in the state-wide Energy Upgrade California program must have: a valid California contractor's license appropriate to the scope of work, appropriate bonding, completion of mandatory orientation session workshops, obtain insurance to utility minimums, a signed Contractor Participation Agreement, and building permits on all work as required by local jurisdiction requirements.

Truthdig Radio Moves to Thursdays at 4pm on 90.7 KPFK

KPFK launches a Friday afternoon comedy block featuring the political comedy of David Feldman, Jimmy Dore, and Lalo Alcaraz; Al Jazeera News moves to weekdays at 2pm; and a new auxiliary transmitter is installed on Mount Wilson

January 18, 2012 – North Hollywood, CA. Pacifica Radio KPFK announces a series of changes to its mid-afternoon weekday schedule that begins today and includes the move of Truthdig Radio to Thursdays at 4pm. Produced by the team at the award-winning website Truthdig.com, each week the radio show features segments on some of the stories found on the website, alongside original reports generated for the radio show.

Anchored by Truthdig editor Peter Scheer, the segments are hosted by a range of regular Truthdig contributors, including Robert Scheer, Kasia Anderson, producer Joshua Sheer and award-winning cartoonist Mr. Fish. Truthdig's regular columnists, some of whom are among the most popular in the American blogosphere – among them, Chris Hedges, Larry Gross, Madison Shockley, and Bob Scheer himself – also appear regularly on the show as guests or commentators. Truthdig.com is three-time winner of the Webby for best political blog, most recently ahead of the Huffington Post and the NY Times.

Says KPFK’s Program Director, Alan Minsky: “Truthdig Radio is a great addition to our afternoon drive time line-up. Like the website, the radio show aligns with the Pacifica Radio Mission, not only in the way it provides excellent journalism, but in the way it delivers engaging radio that asks the challenging questions that need to be asked and seeks social justice-oriented solutions.”

Other KPFK programming schedule updates of note are:

· Pacifica Radio’s Al Jazeera News moves to 2pm Monday through Friday, providing Southern California radio listeners with the earliest-available daily global news wrap up from one of the most influential broadcast news outlets in the world;

· Alternative Radio returns, hosted by radical journalist David Barsamian on Tuesdays at 3pm;

· KPFK unites its political comedy shows in a comedy block Fridays from 2:30pm to 5pm. The line-up starts with the David Feldman Show, hosted by multiple Emmy award-winning comedy writer David Feldman and featuring a troupe of comics well known in the stand-up and sketch comedy world; followed by the Jimmy Dore Show at 3pm, hosted by one of America's sharpest political comedians, Jimmy Dore, who was featured in the hit Comedy Central special Citizen Jimmy; and is anchored by the Pocho Hour of Power at 4pm, hosted by Lalo Alcaraz, the creator of the nationally-syndicated daily comic strip La Cucaracha and a team of local comics, presenting political analysis, comedy, and music.

KPFK is making these afternoon programming changes at an important moment in its recent history. The station has experienced a series of broadcast interruptions due to aging equipment at its 110,000-watt Mount Wilson transmitter and power outages to the transmission site. As of late last week, KPFK is proud to announce that a new auxiliary transmitter and a new back-up generator system have been installed on Mount Wilson, ensuring a regular, continuous broadcast signal.
