Smoke from a burning building on Melrose Ave. and helicopters in the sky Saturday evening in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles

Reacting to the pain and anger felt across the nation in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, protests across Los Angeles began peacefully.
Mass protests Saturday across the Southern California region were reportedly also largely peaceful. In addition to the downtown protests, larger protests were planned in affluent locations, including on Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills and in the Fairfax District around The Grove.
Protesters, many carrying signs critical of police and police violence, engaged in various stand-offs with police. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to corral crowds. Some protesters threw bottles and used trash bins as make-shift barriers in an attempt to stand their ground.
Hours into the protests, after some engaged in looting, graffiti, and the setting of car and building fires, unlawful assemblies were declared.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti first imposed an 8 pm curfew in downtown Los Angeles alone, then expanded it to the entire city. Other cities across L.A. County followed suit.
Garcetti has asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to deploy hundreds of National Guard members to Los Angeles to work with a fully-deployed LAPD as the unrest continued into the evening.
Saturday's mass unrest was the fourth day in a row of protest in Los Angeles over police abuse.
On Wednesday evening, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles organized the first protest, which moved to various locations downtown, and remained largely peaceful.
Leaders of BLMLA called for the prosecution of police officers who kill. They also called for a reduction in funding for police in Los Angeles. The LAPD is one of the only city departments receiving more funding, instead of taking cuts, as the pandemic and months-long shutdown take their toll on the city budget.
