Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks is an annual celebration of our ancestors and an invocation for the South Central LA community.
The festival features a libation ceremony, procession and an exciting lineup of dance and musical performances. The blessing and libation ceremony are designed to invoke a healing and reflection process in the community. The procession through the streets symbolizes the people's power and capacity to take ownership over their community, address challenges and create change.
Since the early 1980s, at least 200 Black women and girls were victims of serial murders or mysteriously disappeared in South LA. Many were victims of the multiple serial killers who preyed on vulnerable and impoverished Black women.
This loss and trauma must be acknowledged, which is why we will be honoring R.O.S.E. (Reclaiming Our Sisters Everywhere) as one of our ancestors this year at our Festival of Masks. These victims deserve a permanent memorial that reclaims their dignity, shows community care and provides their family a space for healing.
Join us in honoring R.O.S.E. South LA on Sunday, June 29.
