Assata Shakur, former member of the Black Panther Party, the first woman ever to be named as a terrorist on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, died in Havana Cuba on September 25. Wrongly and unjustly entenced to life imprisonment for the death of a New Jersey state trooper in 1973, she escaped from prison on November 2, 1979 and lived out the rest of her days under the protection of the Cuban government. South Los Angeles will celebrate her life and her 46th year of freedom from injustice this Sunday, November 2, 2025 from 12 Noon to 3pm in Leimert park at the Community-Owned Center, 4276 S Crenshaw Blvd., at 43rd Street. Featuring DJ Ade, Black Panther Party Elders, Grupo Aña Adé SoLá and MORE!

Join Black Lantern Books in embracing the incredible life of Assata Shakur, revolutionary, Black Panther Party member, soldier of the Black Liberation Army, and a liberated political prisoner. After attending CCNY, Shakur moved to Oakland, California, where she joined the Black Panther Party (BPP), and worked to organize protests and community education programs. After returning to New York City, she led the BPP chapter in Harlem, coordinating the Free Breakfast for Children program, free clinics, and community outreach. Shakur joined the Black Liberation Army (BLA), an offshoot whose members were inspired by Algerian independence fighters. She began using the name Assata Olugbala Shakur in 1971, rejecting JoAnne Chesimard as a “slave name.” Shakur lived out the rest of her years in Cuba, where she became an ancestor on September 25.

Sunday, November 2nd 2025 from 12 Noon to 3pm in Leimert Park at the Community-Owned Center, 4276 S Crenshaw Blvd., at 43rd Street.
