Kalaivanar Foundation presents She’s Auspicious by Mythili Prakash at The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA on Saturday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m.
A full-length dance and music work featuring an all-female cast, She's Auspicious blurs the lines between goddess and woman to explore the intricate interplay between the worship of goddesses and treatment of women in society. The goddess/woman paradox allows the unraveling of socio-cultural myths, stories, and values that are beautiful and personal, but simultaneously deeply rooted in systemic power structures. She's Auspicious is currently nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production.
Mythili Prakash’s innovative vision as a choreographer, combined with her powerful conviction as a performer, distinguishes her as one of the most respected contemporary Bharatanatyam artists today. Her work is unique – while rooted in the intricate and nuanced language of Bharatanatyam, it confronts the socio-political global world we live in today. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Prakash made her solo debut in India at the age of eight and has since performed and toured worldwide. Initially trained by her mother, Viji Prakash, she has been mentored by Malavika Sarukkai and Akram Khan, and she continues to perform as a principal dancer in Khan’s company. Beyond the concert stage, she served as Ang Lee’s choreography assistant on his film, Life of Pi, in which she played the role of Pi’s wife. Mythili is a 2023 United States Artists Fellow and has received several major awards including the Creation to Performance grant from the Irvine Dance Foundation and the Artistic Innovation grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation. She is also a 2024 United Artists Fellowship recipient. Most recently, her short dance film Mollika, commissioned by Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage, was nominated for a 2025 National Dance Award for Best Short Dance Film.
“As the dancer, I inhabit the character of the goddess Durga, who was created by male gods: her physicality constructed from their energy, her ten arms programmed with their weapons to kill an army of demons,” comments Mythili Prakash. “In doing this, I seek to embody and linger in psychological states that challenge the ideals of ‘restraint’ that characterize femininity in both classical dance and in society; this mythical narrative becomes a mirror to our present day reality, connected to questions of power and agency, reflecting my own lived and observed experiences as a woman.”
All net proceeds from She’s Auspicious will be donated to SABA North America Foundation, providing crucial support to South Asian survivors of domestic violence.
