Global Village Honors Eddie Palmieri & Flaco Jiménez

🎶 Global Village – Monday Tributes to Eddie Palmieri & Flaco Jiménez

Join Kathy Díaz this Monday, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. on Global Village as she pays tribute to two legendary musicians and trailblazers we recently lost. Each represents a unique and essential style within the Latin music world—Eddie Palmieri and Flaco Jiménez.

Eddie Palmieri

Eddie Palmieri

The Puerto Rican, Grammy Award–winning pianist, bandleader, and composer passed away on August 6. The New York Times wrote that his “contributions to Afro-Caribbean music helped usher in the golden age of salsa in New York City” and his “far-reaching career established him as one of the great musical masterminds of the 20th century—not to mention one of its fieriest performers.”

Palmieri created masterpieces with his groups La Perfecta and La Perfecta II, performed with the Fania All Stars and Tico All Stars, collaborated with top artists across genres, and received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.

Joining Kathy during the first hour is Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Brian Lynch, whose collaboration with Palmieri began in 1987. Their joint recording, The Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project: Simpático, won the 2007 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Recording.

Flaco Jiménez

Flaco Jiménez

Mexican American singer, songwriter, and accordionist from San Antonio, Texas, Jiménez passed away on July 31. A Grammy winner and recipient of both Americana Music Awards and Tejano Music Awards, his style ranged from conjunto and norteño to tejano.

A solo performer and session musician, Jiménez was also a member of the Texas Tornados and Los Super Seven. He was a fixture at the annual Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio. As Texas music curator Hector Saldaña said: “Flaco Jiménez was to San Antonio what Louis Armstrong was to New Orleans.”

In the second hour, Kathy is joined by Juan Tejeda—former professor of Mexican-American Studies, musician, and founder of the Tejano Conjunto Festival—to reflect on Jiménez’s remarkable legacy.
