Assumpta Oturu, lovingly known as Sister Africa, was the longtime host of Spotlight Africa on KPFK 90.7 FM and a powerful voice in the Africanist media and scholarly communities. She passed on July 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of journalism, poetry, and advocacy for peace and justice.

Join us to celebrate the extraordinary life of Assumpta A. Oturu — “Sister Africa” — journalist, poet, truth-teller, and longtime host of Spotlight Africa on KPFK 90.7 FM.
This memorial gathering will include music, reflection, and tributes from friends, family, and community. Together, we’ll honor her voice and legacy in the struggle for peace, justice, and African liberation.

Sister Assumpta passed away suddenly at the age of 71, leaving behind siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. To honor her memory and fulfill her final wish to return home to Uganda, we have established a fundraiser to help transport her body from Los Angeles to Uganda for proper funeral services and burial.
Any donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference in ensuring Sister Assumpta's journey back home is a testament to the love and empathy that binds us all as a compassionate community.
