Matching Donations

Your employer may double what you already gave KPFK

Thousands of companies match employee donations to nonprofits. The money is already budgeted. You have to ask for it, and almost nobody does.

$120 you gave + $120 from your employer = $240 to KPFK That is the common one-to-one match. Some employers pay two or three times what you gave. Most retroactively cover gifts you made earlier this year.

A matching gift program is a standing corporate commitment: when an employee donates to an eligible nonprofit, the company writes a second check. Most of that money is never claimed, because the employee never files. Filing usually takes about five minutes online.

Check your employer

Type in where you work. The search tells you whether they match, at what rate, what their minimums and caps are, and links you straight to their submission form.

Check the other sections too. The same search covers volunteer grants, where your employer pays KPFK for hours you have already volunteered here, and payroll giving, where a few dollars a paycheck comes to KPFK automatically. Plenty of people qualify for two or three of these at once. Our volunteer grants page has the details on hours.

What a match is worth

Match rateYour $100 becomesYour $500 becomes
1:1$200$1,000
2:1$300$1,500
3:1$400$2,000

One-to-one is the most common. Annual caps per employee typically run from $1,000 to $15,000, and some programs set a minimum gift of $25 or $50. Search your own employer above for their actual terms.

Monthly gifts count too

If you are a KPFK sustainer, most programs will match your recurring donations, either gift by gift or as an annual total. Twenty-five dollars a month is $300 a year, and a one-to-one match makes it $600. Submit once at the end of the year with your annual giving statement, or file each month if your employer's portal makes that easy.

Need your giving statement? Email matching@kpfk.org and we will send one.

How to file

  1. Search your employer above and follow the link to their giving portal, or ask HR for the matching gift form.
  2. Find us in their system. Search Pacifica Foundation or the EIN below, not "KPFK."
  3. Enter your gift: the date, the amount, and KPFK as the designation if their form allows one.
  4. Submit. If the form needs a receipt, use your KPFK acknowledgment email, or ask us for a copy.
  5. Forward the confirmation to matching@kpfk.org so we know to watch for the money.

Some employers will then email KPFK to verify your gift. We answer those. Those requests expire, often in 30 days, and they die quietly if nobody responds, so forwarding us your confirmation is the single most useful thing you can do.

Gave earlier this year? You can probably still claim it

Matching gift programs are almost always retroactive. Deadlines vary: some close at the end of the calendar year, some run to January or March of the following year, and many give you a full twelve months from the date of your gift.

Fund drive pledges count. Sustainer payments count. A gift you made in January usually still qualifies. If you have given to KPFK at any point this year and your employer matches, go file now rather than at the deadline.

Searching "KPFK" may not find us. KPFK is licensed to and operated by the Pacifica Foundation, and that is the name on our tax exemption. Look for Pacifica Foundation - KPFK. Any other Pacifica Foundation listings are our sister stations. The EIN above always works.

Designate KPFK if you can. Some portals let you add a note or program designation. Put KPFK 90.7 FM in it. Matched funds arrive from corporate giving platforms that often do not say which station or which donor they came from.

Questions

How do I know if my employer matches?

Search above. If they are not listed, ask your HR or community giving department directly. Plenty of programs, especially at smaller companies, are not in any public database.

I am retired. Do I qualify?

Often, yes. A significant number of programs match gifts from retirees, sometimes at a reduced rate. Search your former employer.

My spouse works somewhere that matches. Can they file for my gift?

Sometimes. Some programs match gifts made by a spouse or domestic partner. Check their program terms, and if it is unclear, ask their HR department.

Does it matter that KPFK is a radio station?

Rarely. Most programs match any 501(c)(3) and public media is squarely eligible. A few exclude religious or political organizations. KPFK is neither.

Is my matched gift tax-deductible?

Your own donation is deductible to you. The employer's match is deductible to them, not to you. Your KPFK giving statement reflects only what you gave.

Does the match change my membership level or thank-you gift?

No. Your membership level and any premium are based on what you personally gave. The match is additional money for the station.

How long until the money arrives?

Often months. Many corporate programs pay out quarterly or annually in batches. That is normal and does not mean anything went wrong.

My employer needs KPFK to verify my gift.

Forward us the request at matching@kpfk.org the day you get it. We will complete the verification. Do not wait, because these requests expire.

I already filed and never heard anything.

Email matching@kpfk.org with your employer's name and roughly when you submitted. We can check whether the funds landed and follow up with the giving platform if they did not.

Can I do this and a volunteer grant?

Yes, and many people can. They are separate programs with separate forms. See our volunteer grants page.
