Black History in Folk Music - A KPFK Black History Month Special

Description: Folk music is a story wrapped in song, and the oral tradition of storytelling is how we remember who we are. Celebrate the Black History found in the sounds of early 20th-century folk and blues music, and hear how these Black musical ancestors shaped American music as we know it today. Featuring the stories and melodies of Blind Willie Johnson, Elizabeth Cotten, Lead Belly.

Rock and Roll Precursors - A KPFK Women's History Month Special

Description: Like most things in American popular culture, rock and roll can trace its history to Black women. In the spirit of Black History Month and the incoming Women's History Month, this program celebrates three unsung Black blueswomen whose innovations and musical contributions shaped rock and roll into the sound we know and love today. Featuring the stories and melodies of Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
