PERFORMERS:

KALAPANA – Kalapana emerged as one of the most popular bands on the Hawaiian music scene in the 70s, producing a steady stream of hits. Their 1975 debut album was hailed as one of the best of the mid-70s Hawaiianrenaissance. Tracks like “Naturally,” “Nightbird,” “The Hurt,” “You Make It Hard,” and “When the Morning Comes” became household tunes and still enjoy frequent play on contemporary Hawaiian radio. Musical trends have come and gone, but Kalapana’s many hits have remained Island classics. Kalapana still stands as a symbolof inspiration for contemporary Hawaiian music today.

Performing as Kalapana - DJ Pratt (lead guitar, vocals), Gaylord Holomalia (keyboards, vocals), Kenji Sano (bass, vocals), Todd Yukumoto (saxophone & flute), Garin Poliahu (drums) and John Valentine (vocals, guitar).

SPECIAL GUEST- MICHAEL PAULOOne of the most versatile and cosmopolitan saxophonists in pop, soul and contemporary jazz for nearly 35 years, Michael Paulo has added his distinct saxpertise to a virtual who’s who of artists, including Al Jarreau (Paulo’s longest term touring association), James Ingram, No. 1 Smooth Jazz Trumpeter and guitarist Rick Braun and Peter White, Oleta Adams, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin, Jeffrey Osborne, Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Carl Anderson, Bobby Caldwell, Johnny Mathis and more. Paulo grew up in a musical family (his father a pianist, his mother a singer, his siblings all playing instruments) and though he came upon the sax relatively late at age 15, he quickly became first horn player in his high school band and was playing professional gigs around the islands within a few years. Rather than accept a scholarship to North Texas State, he chose a more adventurous road by joining Hawaiian pop/rock band Kalapana, who he will be reuniting with at Showtime 2017. After playing regularly and recording on all four of Kalapana’s albums from 1975 through 1979, Paulo recorded a solo album for Japanese release on Trio records. In addition to exposing him to the Japanese jazz audience, Tats in the Rainbow gave him the opportunity to work with legendary pianist Herbie Hancock.

HONOREE AADAP is proud to honor Dr. Ford Kuramoto with the Community Leadership Award. Ford played an

essential role in the founding of AADAP. Through his position at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and with the assistance of K. Pat Okura and then director Bertram Brown, Ford was able to guide the proposal prepared by Karl Nobuyuki and other Los Angeles-based activists to be funded, resulting in the founding of AADAP. Since then Dr. Kuramoto has dedicated his life to ensuring that Asian Pacific Islander families have access to culturally relevant mental health and substance abuse services.  He is also co-founder of NAPAFASA.

BACKGROUND - Since 1972, AADAP has grown to be a leader in providing prevention and treatment services to Asian and Pacific Islander families affected by the consequences of substance abuse and addiction. AADAP addresses these unmet needs in our community by targeting public and private resources in order to offer the necessary programs that make a difference against the real and far reaching costs of substance abuse and addiction that touch every segment of our society. AADAP continues to serve over 16,000 clients annually from all over Los Angeles County and beyond, including Metro LA, South LA, San Fernando Valley, the South Bay, and San Bernardino.

Your support of AADAP, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (Tax ID: 952848695), will have the benefit of “Changing Lives and Saving Families” by addressing the consequences of substance abuse and addiction.
