Talk radio has not always been the exclusive meeting place for conservatives, reactionaries, and hostile white nationalists. Once upon a time there were radio stations like KABC-AM in Los Angeles staffed by professionals — talk show hosts with true expertise as journalists, pro athletes, college professors, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and even a real restaurant critic.
And for more than 30-years, the dean of L.A. talk radio hosts, Michael Jackson, presented a classy and dignified interview program each weekday afternoon featuring the most influential world leaders, authors, and celebrities, not to mention a few presidents and kings.
Michael Jackson died earlier this month at the age of 87, and on this week's Ageless Wisdom Show on KPFK-90.7 FM, we pay tribute to Michael with a rebroadcast of my interview of him in our KPFK studios in February of 2004.
We talk about the destruction of talk radio by sensationalistic right-wingers who claimed to champion the cause of aggrieved white men with an everlasting fear of the other — minorities, immigrants, gays, lesbians, and even soccer moms often called "femi-Nazis."
