Description: Featuring the Music of Georges Bizet, Rodion Shchedrin and Igor Stravinsky!  Carmen: Impetuous Carmen seduces Don José in order to convince him to let her out of jail. Once outside, she thinks she’s finally free before realizing that she’s in fact prisoner of a love triangle: she wants to be with the famous Torero Escamillo, but she can’t make Don José go away.  Petruska: At Saint-Petersburg’s carnival, three puppets are playing the same role over and over: the unhappy lover Petrushka, the coquette and a Moor. Fed up with this endless part that never goes well for him, Petrushka attacks his rival and flees from the puppets theater. Carmen is as passionate and free-spirited as ever as she finds herself caught in a love triangle. The passionate one act ballet by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso originally conceived for legendary Bolshoi prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya will captivate audiences alongside Petrushka, a new creation for the Bolshoi by contemporary choreographer Edward Clug, in an evening encapsulating the soul of Russian Ballet.

Description:  Once the centre of the New York bohemia, Greenwich Village is now home to lux restaurants, and buzzer door clothing stores catering to the nouveau riche.  But one shop in the heart of the Village remains resilient to the encroaching gentrification: Carmine Street Guitars. There, custom guitar maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice Cindy Hulej, build handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels, bars, churches and other local buildings. Nothing looks or sounds quite like a Rick Kelly guitar, which is the reason they are embraced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Jim Jarmusch, just to name a few.  Featuring a cast of prominent musicians and artists, the film captures five days in the life of Carmine Street Guitars, while examining an all-too-quickly vanishing way of life.

Description:  Boundary pushing auteur Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol) presents a provocative new perspective on one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century.  Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him—Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)—remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader (Matt Smith). Confined to an isolated cellblock in a California penitentiary, the trio seem destined to live out the rest of their lives under the delusion that their crimes were part of a cosmic plan—until empathetic graduate student Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is enlisted to rehabilitate them. Convinced the prisoners are not the inhuman monsters the world believes them to be, Karlene begins the arduous process of breaking down the psychological barriers erected by Manson. But are the women ready to confront the horror of what they did?

Description:  Arvo Pärt is is the most performed living composer in the world, but he is considered to be something of a recluse, and his person and work have rarely been documented on film. In this documentary we get to know Arvo Pärt as an artist combining an incredible sensitivity with humor and energy in his work. His reputation stems from his deeply-held belief that it’s not through words that a great artist communicates, but simply through music. Though he may seem reclusive in his person, what he wants to say and what he means is written in notes.  Pärt is known for his minimalistic style that employs his self-invented compositional technique "tintinnabuli." It is this harmonious, spiritual and minimalistic approach to music that forms the basis of That Pärt Feeling – a feeling of wholeness, beauty and essence of being, embraced by millions of persons all around the world. Pärt’s intense collaboration with the Cello Octet Amsterdam is at the heart of this documentary, which sheds a bright light on Pärt’s universe. A universe not only inhabited by classical musicians like Tõnu Kaljuste, Candida Thompson or Daniel Reuss, but also by choreographers like Jiří Kylián, filmmakers like Alain Gomis and young musicians like Kara-Lis Coverdale. They are all looking for "that Pärt feeling."  "Arvo Pärt’s music is a house on fire and an infinite calm." Michael Stipe.   "He gives space to the listeners; he can go inside the music and live there." Björk

Description:  Klimt & Schiele: Eros and Psyche, recounts the start of the Vienna Secession, a magical art movement formed in the late 1890's for art, literature and music, in which new ideas are circulated, Freud discovers the drives of the psyche, and women begin to claim their independence. It was a movement that marked a new era outside the confines of academic tradition.  At the heart of Secession were artists Gustav Klimt and his protégé and dear friend Egon Schiele. This exhibition proves an in-depth examination of images of extraordinary visual power: from the eroticism of Klimt's mosaic-like works, to the anguished and raw work of the young Schiele in his magnetic nudes and contorted figures against the backdrop of nocturnal Vienna, full of masked balls and dreams imbued with sexuality.

Description: Hey now! Rock and roll at The Frida Cinema on Wednesday, April 24th when Los Angeles Arts Society returns with 1986’s True Stories – a completely cool, multi-purpose movie from Talking Heads frontman David Byrne! With little more than his tremulous voice and quirky observations, Byrne takes viewers on a tour through the small town of Virgil, Texas, in the days leading up to its sesquicentennial Celebration of Specialness. Through encounters with such characters as lovelorn Louis Fyne (John Goodman), a benevolent voodoo magician (Pops Staples), and a civic leader prone to marital strife and playing with his food (Spalding Gray), our nameless narrator weaves together gentle social commentary and amusingly strange vignettes in a uniquely picturesque depiction of modern American life. This depiction is rendered all the more vivid by Talking Heads’ delightfully-driven soundtrack, which playfully underscores the film’s idiosyncratic tone and captures the eccentric energy of Virgil and its inhabitants. When the tour ends and the film is over, join Stephen Tobolowsky – one of the film’s screenwriters, and a prolific actor with credits including Groundhog Day, Californication, and Silicon Valley – for a Q&A full of funny but true stories about the making of the movie! Not only that, but he’ll also be signing his books My Adventures With God and The Dangerous Animals Club. Copies will be available for purchase in the lobby! The movie starts at 7pm, but come early!  At 6:30pm, doors open for the Television Man Preshow, a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience your favorite Talking Heads videos and performances on the big screen! Discount advance tickets are available online and at the Frida box office through April 23rd! Join the Frida on what’s sure to be a wild, wild night!

Description/Review: Matteo Garrone’s DOGMAN leaves you feeling like you've just enjoyed a superb Italian opera, or an engrossing character study for a Martin Scorsese film. Or perhaps an allegorical tale from a small isolated town in a Sergio Leone spaghetti western. DOGMAN is filled with drama, pathos, and a bit of comedy, and centers on a fascinating protagonist who undergoes a dramatic change in the face of violent forces beyond his control. This wonderful character study is actually loosely based on a true story about a dog coiffeur. The main character, Marcello, is a small man with a big heart. He loves his job grooming dogs (ergo the name of his business… “Dogman”) and styling winners in dog competitions. He can calm vicious dogs bigger than he, cajoling them like a dog whisperer, and will sometimes share his food with them. At one point he even risks his life and liberty to save a dog someone else has put in harms’ way. Divorced, Marcello lives alone but is not lonely. He fills his days with visitations and vacations with his adoring young daughter, and meals and football games with the other businessmen in his small, run down and isolated seaside suburb on the brink of desertion. Overall, Marcello is a slight, affable man who seems to love life, and who gets along by going along.  Even so, life is not easy. Marcello and the small community are terrorized by Simone, a huge brute of a violent bully who rides a noisy motorcycle, wears a leather jacket with “Uncle Sam” emblazoned on the back, and who intimidates Marcello into providing him with cocaine and assistance in his crimes. Marcello is not a fighter, and he placates and acquiesces to Simone’s demands, trying to cajole him the way he manages the large aggressive dogs under his care.  It is the audiences’ recognition that this tenuous détente will not last that fuels the film with an sense of operatic drama; as Simone grows more and more out of control, something will have to give, probably at great cost to Marcello and those for whom he cares. DOGMAN was directed by the imaginative Italian director Matteo Garrone—his TALE OF TALES is an all-time favorite adult fairy tale—gorgeous and otherworldly, dark and bizarre, quirky and allegorical. His other features, GOMORRAH and REALITY, are also acclaimed award winners. Although not nominated, DOGMAN was selected as the Italian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. That means it stood in fabulous company, as many of last year’s nominees (CAPERNAUM, COLD WAR, ROMA, and SHOPLIFTERS), were all amazing films. DOGMAN has already garnered a wide range of awards, including the well-earned Best Actor Award at the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival…you will not soon forget Marcello Fonte’s expressive and impressive portrayal of Marcello.

Description: If the Dancer Dances invites viewers into the intimate world of the dance studio. Stephen Petronio, one of today’s leading dance-makers, is determined to help his dancers breathe new life into RainForest (1968), an iconic work by the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham.  With help from three members of the former Cunningham company, the film tracks Petronio’s dancers as they strive to re-stage this great work, revealing what it takes to keep a dance – and a legacy – alive. Timed to coincide with Cunningham’s centennial, If the Dancer Dances is the first documentary on the subject of Cunningham’s work since his passing in 2009.“The dance studio is a private and mysterious place. After all, it’s where great works of choreography are created and kept alive. If the Dancer Dances grants us rare access, bringing us into the studio to watch the staging of a Merce Cunningham masterwork on the Stephen Petronio Company. It’s the tracking of this intimate process, a dance being passed one body to another, that makes this film a great gift.” - Mikhail Baryshnikov. Description: This striking documentary from BAFTA-nominated directors Jacqui Morris and David Morris traces the extraordinary life of Rudolf Nureyev, the dancer that transcended fame in the dance world to become a pop culture icon of his time.  It charts his rise from humble beginnings to his eventual defection to the West, an event that shocked the world. The film features never-before-seen footage and contextualizes not just the man but also the times in which he lived, discussing the politically charged divide between Russia and the West and the critical role that Nureyev played as a cultural and global phenomenon. A quarter of a century after Nureyev’s death, his story has never been more relevant: his defection to the West is symbolic as Russia and the West struggle once more to reconcile conflicting values; as we obsess over celebrity, Nureyev’s status as a global icon in an age before social media is doubly significant; as the Russian government’s attitude towards homosexuality is seen as medieval in its archaism, Nureyev’s unapologetic openness about his sexuality over half a century ago can be seen for the act of trailblazing bravery it truly was; and finally, having left a legacy in the dance world stemming from Mikhail Baryshnikov to the current era of Marcelo Gomes, Carlos Acosta and Sergei Polunin, it is telling that Nureyev is still widely considered the finest male ballet dancer ever to grace the stage.  “A meticulous, heartbreaking tour de force.”--Leslie Felperin, The Guardian

Description:  Little Woods is a modern-day western which follows Ollie (Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson) and Deb (Baby Driver‘s Lily James), a pair of estranged sisters, both who have been living at the fringes of society in a small North Dakota town.  Ollie, who’s been illegally running pills across the Canadian border before being caught by the authorities, is looking to put the past behind her. But when her mother dies and Deb is faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Ollie must decide whether or not to return to her former way of life to prevent the foreclosure of their family home.  Nia DaCosta (who was selected to helm the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced Candyman reboot) directs this taut thriller, ripe with social commentary on the opioid crisis and the economy, where family ties are tested and the painful past resurfaces.  “DaCosta deftly balances Ollie’s illicit activities with the economic anxieties so many have to struggle with to create the kind of suspense Hitchcock or Scorsese would envy.” — Andrea Thompson, Cultured Vultures.  “The life-on-the-margins drama makes a fine, tense vehicle for Tessa Thompson, who in the last few years has stood out in a variety of genres.” — John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter.  “DaCosta’s meticulous work in laying out a socially conscious scenario in such a wildly entertaining way shines through, and for a film that strives towards new beginnings, one couldn’t be more excited about the future of this exceptional first-time writer/director.” — Stephen Saito, The Moveable Fest

Le Guin is a breathtaking journey through the late writer’s career and her worlds, both real and fantastic. “By framing her life in the context of second-wave feminism, 'Worlds of Ursula K. Description: Mark Your Calendars--You Won't Want to Miss This!! Laemmle Theatres and the Anniversary Classics Series present a 50th anniversary screening of one of the most provocative and explosive films of the late 60s, Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool. Wexler was already an Oscar-winning cinematographer of such films as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, In the Heat of the Night, and The Thomas Crown Affair when he made his directorial debut with this picture. He also had a background in documentaries, which he put to use in this feature set in Chicago in the summer of 1968, with a climax that takes place during the Democratic convention and the bloody police riot that accompanied it. The film mixes fact and fiction, documentary footage and staged scenes, as it tells the story of a TV news cameraman, played by Robert Forster, who comes to recognize the moral obligations of a journalist during turbulent times.  The film’s co-stars include Peter Bonerz, Marianna Hill, and the late Verna Bloom, who gave an especially poignant performance as an Appalachian woman who becomes involved with Forster. Newcomer Harold Blankenship plays her son, who is befriended by Forster.  Wexler wrote the screenplay and acted as his own cinematographer. Oscar winner Verna Fields edited the picture, and Mike Bloomfield composed the score. The film was controversial but enormously successful. It was rated X by the Classification and Ratings Administration of the MPAA, ostensibly for nudity and language, but Wexler commented that “it was a political X.” It was later re-rated R without cuts.  The New York Times’ Vincent Canby wrote, “The result is a film of tremendous visual impact, a kind of cinematic Guernica, a picture of America in the process of exploding into fragmented bits of hostility, suspicion, fear and violence.” The Los Angeles Times’ Charles Champlin agreed that “Medium Cool provides an astonishingly wide but economical documentation of this particular moment in our history.” And Newsweek’s Joe Morgenstern called it “an exciting piece of work that must be seen by anyone who cares about the development of modern movies.” The film’s reputation continued to grow in later years, with Siskel and Ebert hailing it as “a well-crafted masterpiece.” In 2003 it was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.  Robert Forster made his film debut as the object of Marlon Brando’s obsession in John Huston’s controversial 1967 film, Reflections in a Golden Eye, which also starred Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Harris, and Brian Keith. Forster continued to work with top directors of the era, co-starring in Robert Mulligan’s The Stalking Moon and George Cukor’s Justine. Later he earned an Oscar nomination for his vivid portrayal in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, and he delivered striking performances in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. He has continued to make a strong impression in TV series Last Man Standing and the reboot of Twin Peaks, and just last year he bolstered the family drama, What They Had, in which he co-starred with Blythe Danner, Hilary Swank, and Michael Shannon.

Description:  Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies. Take a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist's work: Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939), one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. In the early 20th century, Kröller-Müller amassed nearly 300 of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, now housed at her namesake museum in Holland. The Basilica Palladina exhibition in Vicenza, "Amid Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies," with 40 paintings and 85 drawings on loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum, lends the basis of this program, revealing Van Gogh's art and his genius, while allowing audiences to understand the importance of drawing as part of his craft. Van Gogh's seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long, preparatory studies very rarely exhibited - not just sketches but stunning works of art in and of themselves, where the broken flow of lines that characterize the style and strokes in Van Gogh's paintings can already be seen.

Description:  Coming at a moment of profound political and social crisis, What Is Democracy? reflects on a word we too often take for granted.  Director Astra Taylor's (Zizek!, Examined Life) idiosyncratic, philosophical journey spans millennia and continents: from ancient Athens’ groundbreaking experiment in self-government to capitalism’s roots in medieval Italy; from modern-day Greece grappling with financial collapse and a mounting refugee crisis to the United States reckoning with its racist past and the growing gap between rich and poor.  Featuring a diverse cast—including celebrated theorists Angela Davis and Cornel West, trauma surgeons, activists, factory workers, asylum seekers, and former prime ministers—this urgent film connects the past and the present, the emotional and the intellectual, the personal and the political, in order to provoke and inspire. If we want to live in democracy, we must first ask what the word even means. “Fascinating. Confronts us with our pathetic condition and refuses to offer an easy solution, because we need to work it out together.” --Charlie Phillips, Guardian

Description: Lucky You!  The Must-See MANDY is Returning to the Frida Cinema!!!!  It was only a matter of time, but monster hit Mandy is heading back to The Frida Cinema this February!  Pacific Northwest, 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough) lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), Red is catapulted into a phantasmagorical journey filled with bloody vengeance, and laced with fire. To delve deeper into Mandy here would be to risk spoiling many of the film’s surprises – or as Heather Wixson of Daily Dead wrote in her five-star review, “There are so many reasons why I loved Mandy, and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface here – but to be honest, so many of those things were genuine surprises for me as I was watching it, and I feel like that’s the best way for anyone to see it.”  Directed by Panos Cosmatos. 2018. 121 minutes. Rated R.  “Were scientists to engineer an uncut, 100-proof cult sensation, it would probably look, sound, and kick like this.” – A.A. Dowd, AV Club.  “
★★★★. Those still suffering from withdrawal symptoms from the end of David Lynch’s epic Twin Peaks revival last year – the cure has been found.”– James Croot, Stuff.co.nz.  “Mandy is a totally uncompromising vision from a singular filmmaker – a pulsing, twisted descent into heavy metal vengeance that must be seen to be believed.” – Ben Pearson, Slashfilm

Description: Winner of three awards at the very first Academy Awards – Best Photography (Cinematography), Best Actress, and Best Unique and Artistic Picture – director F.W. Murnau’s 1927 silent classic Sunrise (aka Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans) comes to The Frida Cinema on Saturday, February 9th with a Live Score by composer, musician, author, and educator Jack Curtis Dubowsky and his Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble (JCDE)! Debuting a brand-new score to the classic love story in a live concert performed as the film plays overhead, JCDE has arranged haunting sounds that perfectly complement Murnau’s masterpiece, shot in his trademark Expressionist style.  The score is only the latest in a series of acclaimed original scores that Dubowsky has written for classic films, including Murnau’s Nosferatu, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, The Mark of Zorro, and The Phantom Carriage.  Based on the Hermann Sudermann novel “A Trip to Tilsit,” Sunrise stars George O’Brien as a farmer who is happily married to his loving wife (Oscar winner Janet Gaynor), only to find himself falling under the seductive spell of Margaret Livingston, a temptress from The City. Callously ignoring his wife and child and stripping his farm of its wealth on behalf of Livingston, the farmer finds himself enchanted by the bewitching vamp’s stories of city life — and all the jazz, bright lights, and erotic excitement that goes with it — and finds himself seriously considering a diabolical scheme she suggests to rid himself of his wife once and for all.  Will the farmer lose his soul to the sordid temptations of the flesh — or will true love prevail?  The Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble is composed of founder/conductor/composer Dubowsky; Jeff L. Schwartz on double bass; Charles Sharp on woodwinds and electronics;  R. Scott Dibble on keyboards; Henry Webster on violin and viola; Sean Stackpoole on flute; and Slam Nobles on percussion. “Dubowsky’s score perfectly matched the German Expressionist cinematography and Gothic horror of Nosferatu. This is not the heavy Hammer Films romanticism of the 1997 James Bernard orchestration, or even the German post-Wagner romanticism of the original Hans Erdmann score (lost for many years), but a mixture of light romantic lyricism (each character has a memorable musically recurring theme), mixed with sparse 20th century experimental music and musical sound effects.” – KPFK’s review of Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble’s performance of Nosferatu.  “F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise conquered time and gravity with a freedom that was startling to its first audiences. To see it today is to be astonished by the boldness of its visual experimentation.  4/4“ – Roger Ebert Chicago, Sun-Times

Description:  From award-winning documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi (“MERU”) and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin comes National Geographic Documentary Film’s FREE SOLO, a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock … the 3,000ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park … without a rope.  Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold’s climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge, Honnold enters his story in the annals of human achievement.  FREE SOLO is both an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who exceeded our current understanding of human physical and mental potential. The result is a triumph of the human spirit.  “Both intimate and expansive, Free Solo is a documentary beautifully calculated to literally take your breath away. And it does.” –  Los Angeles Times.  “For those who love the thrill of high-adrenaline adventure docs, National Geographic’s “Free Solo” will be a hard experience to top.” – Variety.  “An engaging study of a perfect match between passion and personality.”  – New York Times

Description: A Laemmle Theaters’ Culture Vulture Presentation! Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time – and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. Three cities play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young Picasso visits each and explores their influence on the artist, focusing on specific artworks from these early years. The film thus explains how this young artist acquired his craft. Looking carefully at two key early periods – the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period – the film takes us all the way to 1907 and the creation of a critical painting in the history of art – Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. It was a painting that shocked the art world but changed it irrevocably. Picasso was only 25 years old. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to such great heights.

Description: A Laemmle Theaters’ Culture Vulture Presentation!  In the 18th century during Handel's time, no man was more famous or more celebrated than the castrato Farinelli. The incredible true story of the world-famous opera singer - who was castrated during childhood in order to preserve his voice - comes to life in this Oscar-nominated drama of high notes and even higher passions. For all its emotional extravagance and sheer Baroque lushness, Farinelli is actually a triumph of taut control and superb structuring. --Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

Description: Laemmle Theaters’ Culture Vulture Series presents…Genesis 2.0, which observes the harsh and dangerous life of so-called mammoth hunters on the remote New Siberian Islands in the far north of Siberia.  The archaic landscape in which these people are looking for the tusks of extinct mammoths looks like primordial earth.  There is a kind of gold rush fever in the air, because the prices for this white gold have never been so high. But the thawing permafrost unveils more than just precious ivory. Sometimes the hunters find an almost completely preserved mammoth carcass with fur, liquid blood and muscle tissue on which arctic foxes gnaw. Such finds are magnets for high-tech Russian and South Korean clone researchers in search of mammoth cells with the greatest possible degree of intact DNA. Their mission could be part of a science-fiction plot. They want to bring the extinct woolly mammoth back to life à la Jurassic Park, and resurrect it as a species. And that’s just the beginning. Worldwide, biologists are working on re-inventing life. They want to learn the language of nature and create life following the Lego principle¹². The goal of synthetic biology is to produce complete artificial biological systems. Man becomes the Creator. The resurrection of the mammoth is a first track and manifestation of this next great technological revolution. An exercise. A multi-million dollar game. The new technology may well turn the world as we know it completely on its head…and all of this has its origin in the unstoppably thawing permafrost at the extreme edge of Siberia. Genesis 2.0 is a double-stranded helix of a real-life thriller, chilling and unforgettable.” --Hollywood Reporter

Description: Laemmle Theaters’ Culture Vulture Series presents…Salvador Dali: In Search of Immortality, an in-depth journey through the life and work of Salvador Dalí, and also of Gala, his muse and collaborator. It starts in 1929, a crucial year in Dalí's career and life, as he joined the surrealist group and met Gala, and advances until the year of the artist's death in 1989. In all this vital and artistic journey, Dalí's geographies, especially Portlligat, stand out as the only stable home-workshop he possesses; Figueres, his hometown, where he creates his Dalí Theater-Museum, and Púbol, where the Castle is, exponent of courtly love, which Dalí gives to Gala. But naturally other cities, especially Paris and New York are also central. It is worth noting the numerous documentary contributions that help us get closer to this unique painter of art history, who already has a place assigned among great masters. Contemplating Salvador Dalí himself, Gala, a tour of his creations, family approaches and distancing, all through images and documents, some of them unpublished, brings us closer to a painter who has managed to create a character that is a work of art itself. With this documentary we can go beyond the character and approach the painter and the man, and the spaces conceived by him that have helped to shape his immortality, the immortality of a genius.

Description:  Another Critically Acclaimed Film at the Art Theater in Long Beach…….THE FAVOURITE!  “A fantastic little cupcake of a movie laced with thistle frosting.” –  Time Magazine.  “It’s a perfectly cut diamond of a movie – a finely executed, coldly entertaining entry in the genre of savage misanthropic baroque costume drama.” – Variety.  “It’s a period piece with a wink. It’s also funny as hell and a true big-screen treat.”  – Chicago Sun-Times.  Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

Description:  The FRIDA CINEMA presents Timeless Masterpieces from Ingmar Berman…  Brimming with iconic images that defined the early days of Art House Cinema, Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde Inseglet) stars Max von Sydow as a disillusioned and exhausted knight who, after a decade of battling in the Crusades, encounters Death on a desolate beach and challenges him to a fateful game of chess. Much studied, imitated, and even parodied, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning was one of the early benchmark foreign imports, pushing cinema’s boundaries and ushering in a new era of movie-going. With the generous participation of Janus Films, The FRIDA is so honored to be able to close their Berman series with Bergman’s complete, uncut, 312-minute (yes, that’s just over five hours) Oscar-winning 1982 masterpiece, Fanny and Alexander.  Released in its entirety for Swedish television before having over two hours cut for its US release, Fanny and Alexander – described by Bergman as “the sum total of my life as a filmmaker” – is experienced through the eyes of ten-year-old Alexander, as we witness the delights and conflicts of the Ekdahl family, a sprawling bourgeois clan in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Sweden. In his warmest and most autobiographical film, Bergman combines his trademark melancholy and emotional intensity with immense joy and sensuality.  Winner of the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography for Sven Nykvist’s gorgeous compositions, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration for the sumptuous sets by Anna Asp and Susanne Lingheim, and Best Costume Design for designer Marik Vos-Lundh, Fanny and Alexander is very rarely presented on the big screen, and less so in its uncut version – do not miss this opportunity!

Description:  An Epic Shakespearean Production, Mad Max Style!!  "Lechery, lechery, still wars and lechery: nothing else holds fashion." Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences. Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle, recorded live in Shakespeare's home town. The Greek army is encamped under the walls of Troy and, at the point at which the play begins, the war has reached a stalemate. The Greeks are quarreling amongst themselves. Achilles, their greatest champion, refuses to fight and has withdrawn to his tent with his lover, Patroclus. Equally at odds with themselves, the Trojans are debating the value of continuing the war merely for the sake of keeping Helen. Troilus is much distracted from these military concerns by his love for Cressida, the daughter of a Trojan who has defected to the Greek camp. The young lovers are eagerly assisted by Cressida's uncle Pandarus, who acts as their go-between. However, after only one night together they are parted when Cressida is sent to join her father in the Greek camp. Almost immediately she betrays Troilus with the Greek Diomedes and, discovering this, Troilus is plunged into despair. With the fall of Troy certain, Troilus vows revenge on Achilles.

Description:  SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winner THUNDER ROAD….at the FABULOUS FRIDA CINEMA!!! The Frida Cinema is proud to present this year’s SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winner for Best Narrative Feature, Jim Cumming’s Thunder Road – opening November 2nd for a one-week run! Based on Cumming’s darkly comic Sundance-winning 2016 short film of the same name, Thunder Road follows Officer Jim Arnaud (played by Cummings himself), a decent man struggling with relationship and anger issues.  After he loses his mother, he endeavors to do a better job raising his young daughter Crystal (Kendal Farr), in large part as a love letter to his mother.  A tragicomic portrait that is alternately hilarious and deeply emotionally affecting – and often within the same scene – Thunder Road serves as an outstanding calling card for writer-director-star Jim Cummings.  Since making waves at SXSW, Thunder Road has won several additional film awards, including the Best Picture of the Year awards from Nashville Film Festival, Sidewalk Film Festival, and Deauville Film Festival. “Grade: A.  Though the sky might be falling, Thunder Road swirls about the tragicomedy of Officer Arnaud’s plight with ease. It’s hard to really forge a film that can wreck you and play with such liveliness.” – Cory Woodroof, The Playlist “Jim Cummings astonishes as writer-director-star in this tonally perfect, profoundly moving comic drama.” – Shaun Munro, Flickering Myth  “Thunder Road is an exhilarating ride. It announces Jim Cummings as a talent to be reckoned with and dances on the jagged precipice of emotional contradictions. It’s a graceless dance to watch — but delivered with the utmost control and grace.” – Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle October 11, 2018   “★★★★½.  I have seen humanistic American filmmaking’s future, and its name is Jim Cummings.”– David Fear, Rolling Stone

Description:  NARCISSISTER ORGAN PLAYER, part of the Superb Culture Vulture Series!  One of the contemporary art world’s most acclaimed mixed-media and performance artists, the masked and merkin-clad Narcissister is the subject of this smart, sassy documentary that showcases her spectacle-rich approach to explorations of gender, racial identity, and sexuality.  Directed by the enigmatic artist herself, the film deconstructs her celebrated stage shows which combine dance, elaborate costumes, pop music hits, unabashed eroticism and heavy doses of humor. From public outings with Marilyn Manson, collaborations with Marina Abramovic to a stint on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT - Narcissister is no stranger to the spotlight.
This doc goes behind her iconic mask - revealing her experience growing up and feeling ostracized in blonde-haired, blue-eyed Southern California as the child of a Sephardic Jewish mother and an African-American father.  As Narcissister pushes the boundaries of contemporary art, she must also contend with the waning health of her biggest champion: her eccentric and loving mother.  With as much to say about self-love as self-loathing in women’s lives, Narcissister Organ Player is a thrilling, profound and utterly moving experience.   “What a thrilling, profound experience...trust me: you've never seen anything like it.”--Daily Beast

Description:  Degas: Passion for Perfection, FROM THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM, CAMBRIDGE; DIRECTED BY DAVID BICKERSTAFF. EXHIBITION ON SCREEN journeys from the streets of Paris to the heart of a superb exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, whose extensive collection of Degas’ works is the most representative in Britain. With exclusive access to view rare and diverse works, this film tells a fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learnt from studying the past masters. Sometimes frustrated by his own failings, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made.  Never fully satisfied, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but, now through close examination, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th-century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind. “Art is not a matter of what you see, but what you make other people see.” ~ Edgar Degas

Description:  MARIA BY CALLAS: IN HER OWN WORDS is an intimate look at the life and work of Greek-American opera singer, Maria Callas, one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century, as told in her own words. Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time. Assembling the material for the film took director Tom Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

In a world where journalism is under attack, Marie Colvin (Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike) is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the frontlines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. After being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka, she wears a distinctive eye patch and is still as comfortable sipping martinis with London’s elite as she is confronting dictators. Colvin sacrifices loving relationships, and over time, her personal life starts to unravel as the trauma she’s witnessed takes its toll. Yet, her mission to show the true cost of war leads her -- along with renowned war photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan) -- to embark on the most dangerous assignment of their lives in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. Based on the extraordinary life of Marie Colvin, A PRIVATE WAR is brought to the screen by Academy Award nominee and critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman in his pulse-pounding narrative feature debut.  Opens November 2, 2018.

Description: A timely screening of Charlie Chaplin’s classic SATIRE! Chaplin has an almost mystical way of becoming ever more relevant as history moves on, and there was never a more fitting time than now for this classic film, with its plea for a world of peace, without totalitarianism, despotism, intolerance and racism.  As Simon Wiesenthal put it, “Humour is the weapon of unarmed people” and that weapon was never better used than in Charles Chaplin’s great classic comedy-satire, THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940). When THE GREAT DICTATOR came out in 1940 both the political left and right were puzzled by Chaplin’s final emotional peroration from the screen–not what you are expecting as the climax of a comedy.  “To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. …..”

Akin Omotoso's VAYA made its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and garnered Omotoso the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Director!!  And now VAYA is coming to Laemmle’s Music Hall starting Friday, October 26!  Paying homage to the Tsotsitaal namesake meaning “to go”, filmmaker Akin Omotoso's VAYA chronicles the innocence lost by three young South Africans who journey away from their rural homes on a train bound for Johannesburg.  Stirring and suspenseful, the intertwining stories of strangers struggling to survive culminate in an explosive moment based on real accounts. Three people board the train bound for Johannesburg. Strangers, each on their own mission, with a simple task to complete and in search of family to help them. But when they are betrayed by the very people whose protection they sought, they find themselves trapped in the city - invisible and alone. FRANKENSTEIN returns to international cinemas to mark the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s revolutionary novel.  Captured live in 2011 from the National Theatre stage in London, this thrilling, sold-out production became an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world. Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), Frankenstein features Benedict Cumberbatch (Hamlet, BBC’s Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) alternating between the roles of Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. Adapted by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley.

Description: Like a matador confronting a bull, the artist approaches his easel, his eyes blazing. As he wields his brush, we see through the canvas as the artwork unfolds, erupts, dances into being before our eyes. Pablo Picasso, the most influential artist of the twentieth century, is making a painting, and Henri-Georges Clouzot, the famous French director (The Wages of Fear, Diabolique), is making a movie. In 1955, Clouzot joined forces with his friend Picasso to make an entirely new kind of art film — a film that could capture the moment and the mystery of creativity. Together, they devised an innovative technique — the filmmaker placed his camera behind a semi-transparent surface on which the artist drew with special inks that bled through. Clouzot thus captured a perfect reverse image of Picasso’s brushstrokes and the motion picture screen itself becomes the artist’s canvas. Here, the master creates, and sometimes obliterates, 20 works (most of them, in fact, destroyed after the shoot), ranging from playful black-and-white sketches to Cinemascope color murals — artworks which evolve in minutes through the magic of stop-motion animation. Unavailable for more than a decade, The Mystery of Picasso is exhilarating, mesmerizing, enchanting and unforgettable. It is simply one of the greatest documentaries on art ever made. The French government agreed — in 1984 it declared the film a national treasure.

Description: THE CAKEMAKER-- Contemporary International Art house Cinema at Its Finest!!!  Winner of over 15 international awards, and nominated for over a dozen more!!!   A terrifically impressive feature debut by Israeli writer/director Ofir Raul Graizer. Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who has frequent business visits in Berlin. When an unexpected tragedy befalls Thomas, he must go to Jerusalem in search of answers. There he finds himself weaving a lie he must stretch to conceal the real truth behind his identity. THE CAKEMAKER is a moving exercise in carefully nuanced, slightly melancholy emotional naturalism. Throughout, the film lets us apply our readings to what is displayed, rather than imposing its own.  This is especially true of Thomas Kalkhof’s remarkable performance, one that seems founded on stillness and silence, which we can imagine are natural defenses for a young man who has been deeply wounded by his experiences.  Sad and sweet, and with a rare lyricism, “The Cakemaker” believes in a love that neither nationality, sexual orientation nor religious belief can deter.” -Jeannette Catsoulis, The NY Times;  “A tender, tactile and just-sweet-enough story of hidden love, challenged faith and unwittingly shared grief.” – Guy Lodge, Variety;  “Kalkhof has perfect chemistry with both Miller and Adler. The characters don’t have to talk for the audience to feel the loss, love and desire they’re experiencing.” – Samantha Incorvaia, Arizona Republic

Description:  THE HAPPY PRINCE…A Portrait of the Dark Side of a Genius Who Lived and Died for Love. Starring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Emily Watson, Colin Morgan, Edwin Thomas, Tom Wilkinson.  Best known for his epigrams and plays, Oscar Wilde was a turn-of-the-century Irish poet and playwright whose Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and satirical play The Importance of Being Earnest are still popular today. Once one of the most famous men in London, Oscar Wilde was crucified by a society that once worshipped him--a lover, imprisoned and freed.  The HAPPY PRINCE stars Rupert Everett who, capturing the author’s brilliant wit and flamboyant style, gives a career defining performance as Wilde, physically and emotionally embodying the literary genius as he lives out his last days in exile in Europe. The critics are effusive:  “Moving, unforgettable, ravishing, a gutsy tour deforce”  -Metro;  “Rupert Everett is an exceptional Oscar Wilde”-Screen Daily;  “Rupert Everett is MAGNIFICENT!”-The Guardian.  THE HAPPY PRINCE opens in New York and Los Angeles October 10th but YOU can be one of the first to see it early by calling in now!

Description:  From director Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) and RLJ Entertainment comes highly-anticipated action-thriller Mandy, starring  Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough!   The Frida’s one-week run kicks off with a special 8pm screening on Thursday the 13th which will be followed by a pre-taped (note: NOT LIVE or in-person!) Q&A with Nicolas Cage and director Panos Cosmatos, recorded at L.A.’s legendary Egyptian Theatre!!**  Pacific Northwest, 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagorical journey filled with bloody vengeance, and laced with fire. Dowd, AV Club; “★★★★. Those still suffering from withdrawal symptoms from the end of David Lynch’s epic Twin Peaks revival last year – the cure has been found.”– James Croot, Stuff.co.nz;  “Mandy is a totally uncompromising vision from a singular filmmaker – a pulsing, twisted descent into heavy metal vengeance that must be seen to be believed.” – Ben Pearson, Slashfilm

Description-The Laemmle Theaters present NELLY, A Fascinating Biographical Drama. A high-class prostitute by choice, Nelly Arcan’s colorful life is recreated in a multilayered and stylish mix of make-believe and memoir, revealing Nelly’s alter egos: the neurotic writer, the vulnerable lover, the call girl and the star. Directed by Anne  Émond, NELLY artfully retells the life of Nelly (with an acclaimed performance by Mylène Mackay), an escort who became an international literary star. Nelly wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, Putain in 2001, which was nominated for both the Prix Médicis and the Prix Fémina, two of France's most prestigious literary awards and sold over 80,000 copies as a a critically-acclaimed bestseller. She shocked the literary world with her elegant phrasing and the lurid details of sex work.  Although little is known about the author in the English-speaking world, Nelly became one of Quebec's most loved and most hated public figures, a household name in both Canada and France due to her unflinching tell-all approach to life as a sex worker, over-the-top glamour, and ability to attract media attention.  The Globe & Mail wrote  “she’s one of the best writers Canada has ever produced."  Despite unprecedented success, Nelly’s remarkable life ended in tragedy in 2009, four days after submitting the last edits to her fourth book. Filmmaker Anne Emond is quite a up-and-coming talent and the film lends itself to an interesting discussion on feminism. NELLY was a Toronto International Film Festival Official Selection (2016).

Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her – the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment and mental illness in a culture where that was a particular shame. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and has created a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry and novels. After working as an artist for over six decades, people around the globe are experiencing her Infinity Mirrored Rooms in record numbers as Kusama continues to create new work every day.

Description: A perfect way to start the festive season. Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, performed by the Vienna Philharmoniker, conducted by Christian Thielemann, one of the most recognized conductors of our time, leading the legendary Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. With Annette Dasch, Mihoko Fujimura, Piotr Beczala and George Zeppenfeld. There is perhaps no other musical ensemble more consistently and closely associated with the history and tradition of European classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. In the course of its over 160 year history, the musicians of this most prominent orchestra of the capital city of music have been an integral part of a musical epoch which, due to an abundance of uniquely gifted composers and interpreters, is widely regarded as unique. The orchestra's close association with this rich musical history is best illustrated by the statements of countless pre-eminent musicians of the past. Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world; Gustav Mahler claimed to be joined together through "the bonds of musical art"; and Richard Strauss summarized these sentiments by saying: "All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement."Recorded April 2010

Description:  "Something felt very wrong, and I needed to find out why." …. Jim Stern, Director. Starting six months before the 2016 presidential election, director Jim Stern put his life on hold and -- driven to understand what seemed incomprehensible at the time -- traveled through red states to interview and spend time with Donald Trump supporters from different backgrounds. It was a search for insights and answers, for anything that could explain the billionaire's surging appeal and why these voters remained untroubled by so many troubling things the candidate had said and done. This journey became his Heart of Darkness into the American body politic at a profoundly critical point in our history. And the film he returned with, AMERICAN CHAOS, sheds unique light on difficult issues roiling the nation -- chronicling a cultural divide, still dangerously misunderstood, that continues to tear at the fabric of our democracy. Opens NY & LA September 14; Coming Soon to a City Near You!

Description: Explore the Weird and Wonderful World of David Lynch, On the BIG SCREEN at the Frida Cinema, Where the Strange and the Beautiful Loom Large!!! David Lynch is a four-time Oscar nominee and two-time Cannes award-winner whose enigmatic work in film, music, and television have achieved both cult and critical acclaim.  This month, the Frida Cinema celebrates Lynch’s contributions to cinema with a retrospective of eight of his feature films, screening throughout August. Since the Palme d’Or-winning director broke out with his 1977 feature film debut Eraserhead, he has explored the limits of the human psyche and blurred the line between reality and dreams. As a surrealist, Lynch carried the torch lit by the likes of Luis Buñuel and Alejandro Jodorowsky in exploring the role of cinema to move beyond conventional commercial fare into that of Art at its most genuine and cryptic.  Alternately mind-bending, emotional, and horrifying, his film and television work continues to fascinate audiences and critics alike.

Description:  Great Family Fun!!! Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Presents Disney’s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN! In the heartwarming live action adventure Disney’s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN, the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside. Now grown up, Christopher Robin is stuck in a job where he is overworked, underpaid and facing an uncertain future. He has a family of his own, but his work has become his life, leaving little time for his wife and daughter. Christopher has all but forgotten his idyllic childhood spent with a simple-minded, honey-loving stuffed bear and his friends. But when he is reunited with Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings), now tattered and soiled from years of hugs and play, their friendship is rekindled, reminding Christopher of the endless days of childlike wonder and make believe that defined his youth, when doing nothing was considered the very best something. Following an unfortunate mishap with Christopher Robin’s briefcase, Pooh and the rest of the gang including Piglet (Nick Mohammed), Eeyore (Brad Garrett) and Tigger (Jim Cummings), step out of the forest and venture into London to return the crucial possessions...because best friends will always be there for you.  The film also stars Golden Globe nominee Hayley Atwell (“Agent Carter”) as Christopher Robin’s wife Evelyn; Bronte Carmichael as his daughter Madeline; and Emmy® winner Mark Gatiss (“Sherlock”) as Giles Winslow, Robin’s boss. Featured voices also include: Golden Globe nominee Toby Jones (“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”) as Owl; Oscar winner Peter Capaldi (“Dr. Who”) as Rabbit; and Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (“The Secret Life of Bees”) as Kanga.  Disney’s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN is directed by Golden Globe® nominee Marc Forster (“Finding Neverland”) from a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry (“Golden Exits”) and Oscar® nominee Allison Schroeder (“Hidden Figures”) and a story by Perry based on characters created by A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard.  Disney has a history with the A.A. Milne characters dating back to 1966 when the studio released the animated short “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree” featuring the character Christopher Robin, which was followed by the shorts “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” and “Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Too,” as well as several full-length features and numerous direct-to-DVD titles.

Description: Like Never Before, Experience Some of the Greatest Choreographed Karate Scenes in Film History, including a Riveting Finale in a Room of Mirrors…ENTER THE DRAGON: 45th Anniversary 2K Restoration!  Digitally remastered on a gorgeous 2K print by Warner Bros. in celebration of its 45th Anniversary, ENTER THE DRAGON stars legend Bruce Lee at the top of his game in his final big-screen performance. Determined to help capture the narcotics dealer whose gang was responsible for the death of his sister, a martial arts expert (Lee) enters a kung fu competition in an attempt to fight his way to the dealer’s headquarters. Co-starring genre favorite John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Black Christmas) and U.S. Karate Champion Jim Kelly — both of whom also brought their own karate expertise to the set — ENTER THE DRAGON was the first martial arts film produced by a major Hollywood studio! “No one can overstate the degree of Lee’s international star power and influence. He honorably held his place in a line of great action stars that goes all the way back to Douglas Fairbanks.”— Bob Graham, San Francisco Chronicle;  “If kung fu is now the standard badass language, Enter the Dragon — featuring Lee’s great slow-burn stare — is the first grammar lesson.”— Peter Travers, Rolling Stone;  “The only real disappointment about Enter the Dragon is that it is Bruce Lee’s last movie.” — Jay Cocks, Time Magazine

Description: The Most Influential Western You’ve Never Seen…THE GREAT SILENCE: 50th Anniversary MUST SEE Restoration.  A blistering 50-year-old masterpiece of the Spaghetti Western genre that never received a theatrical release in North America, Django director Sergio Corbucci’s THE GREAT SILENCE has been unearthed, restored, and remastered by FM Classics and Film Movement, and comes to The Frida July 25 – 28!  Klaus Kinski (Aguirre, The Wrath of God) and Jean-Louis Trintignant (Amour) star as a vicious bounty hunter and a mute gunslinger who lock horns in the snowy mountains of Utah during the Great Blizzard of 1899. Inspired by the then-recent deaths of Che Guevara and Malcolm X, the film is notable for its explicitly radical politics and dark tone, matched by an atypical snowbound setting and beautifully haunting score by Ennio Morricone.  The Great Silence has been an inspiration to filmmakers – notably, Quentin Tarantino, who referenced the film’s wintery setting in 2015’s The Hateful Eight.  “Even 50 years later, The Great Silence stands majestically as both a blistering comment about its era and a creatively revisionist genre piece…the restoration is so crisp, the production looks like it was finished yesterday.” – Film Journal International;  “Still hurts so good — half a century later.” – The Village Voice;  “
★★★★★.  It’s been called ‘great’ and ‘Corbucci’s masterpiece.’  It just might be.” – Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com

Description:  EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is thrilled to present one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.
