Doctor Nativo

Mayan Reggae Cumbia
Sunday, November 17, 7:00 pm

Live at the Skirball Cultural Center

Guatemala’s Doctor Nativo layers Mayan spirituality, social activism, and folk wisdom over a propulsive combination of reggae, cumbia, and hip-hop performed with pre-Columbian instruments. Born as Juan Martinez, Doctor Nativo began traveling as a musician following his father's assassination in 1990 during the Guatemalan civil war. Busking his way around the world, he found his voice. At this empowering performance, he’ll play music from his debut album, Guatemaya—a proud assertion of Mayan identity and a call for social justice for his country’s indigenous majority.

Arrive early to explore the exhibitions! The exhibitions El Sueño Americano | The American Dream: Photographs by Tom Kiefer and Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs will be open from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
